drag chains behind each row unit. What are they trying to accomplish? I have my white planter set up so I think it does as nice of a job as the best of them however I am always looking to improve.

While the drag chains may serve several secondary purposes the main reason they are used is to eliminate the "W" footprint of the closing wheels. This can help stop crusting in some conditions. Mike

I notice on the other forum lot of no tillers in the south use them.

Don't see them around here in the wet clay.

We were so far ahead of our time! Growing up we used a steel wheel drill (had a metal box - 40's?) for wheat and barley. That drill had a gajillion drag chains on it. It did just as good of job as everyone's new equipment, so it must have worked well with that particular setup. This was during the days of FAR from no-till.

Mark-Ia is right on.

The chains are primarily for granular incorporation, whether it"s herbicide or insecticide.I have a feeling well be seeing more of them in the near future.
