I have a 1992 chevy 3500 dually 350 gas as a daily driver now then this crazy truck has a NEW ordeal going on. I notice that the temp gage is acting wierd it goes up to 190 then down to about 160 ok thats fine but it does this going up and down bit as Im driveing down the highway at 60 mph and I am hearing the water/aintifreez curlging in the heater box as the water temp gage is doing this up & down bit . when I got to work tonite I checked the top rad, hose it was soft not under presure and when I wolud bring the rpm up the top hose would shrink closed a little then when I would let it idel the hose would regain its size --would a sticking themastat and or a bad rad cap do this wierd stuff???the themastat is only a few months old cause it was running a little warm and I dont want to just start throwing money at it and not knowing what the REAL problem was/is

Could be thermastat, or you may have some blockage. I put three thermastats in my 94 f350 with the 460 before I got one that worked properly. Is heater working fine, or are you having trouble with it also. I would check thermastat before you do anything. I check them with either a propane torch, or boiling water to make sure it's opening and closing proper. If it is you made need to flush system in case you have slight blockage in heater core. Hope this helps. Scott

Sounds like and air lock. I always run it with the cap off until the thermostat opens to get the air out. Also i have had new thermostats off on what temp they open at. Now i check them in a pan of water on a camp stove with a meat thermometer to see if they are correct. I have found them to be way off.

I had a vehicle once that did exactly that and it was because it had a leak and was down so the pump was sucking air sometimes.

If you are hearing gurgling in the heater core it is low on coolant. I just put a new thermostat in my 92 350 and it goes up and down also not to worry. Jim

The original heater hose arrangement had an internal restrictor to coolant through the core.

A sticky thermostat can happen once the system is drained hot. replace as required.

That radiator hose could be a problem as well, try to replace with a new good quality one. I've had them close shut when accelerating and water getting pulled through them. You made mention it was shrinking down a bit. Just a thought.

Check the fluid level and if it is okay, don't worry about it. I have had several Chevys do exactly that and they never heated up. Just turn the radio up and you won't hear the gurgling.

You are seeing normal operation of the thermostat.I see this on my gauge in cold weather on my truck.

Do not use a propane torch or boiling water.Put the thermostat in a tuna can with cold water.Put that on the stove and monitor the temperature with a stem thermometer.Note the temperature when the the thermostat starts to open and again when its full open.A propane torch can overheat and blow out the wax element or melt solder.

After reading all your answers I am not sure what to do now this truck runs great pulls good for a 350 gas but to give you more info yes the heater dose work good and it is full of water/anitfreez. This surging curgling water noise thing with the gage deal JUST STARTED . I had the intake manifold gasket changed about 4 months ago was leaking water out. and then it was running a little warm thoght that a bit of chrud got in the therm. and the rad had a VERY SMALL drip so I added a small can of silver stop leak that worked and now this . you can feel the heater hose that goes to the heater and it surges also ---soooo
Im thinking a bad therm. but why the no persure in the top rad hoseit should be hard as a rock when hot right

I had a 1990 chevy that had weird temp readings.Gurgling is traped air. Turned out to be a bad water pump, or leeking freeze pug somehow air is getting in.

Don't trust what the overflow tank says, you need to park it where the radiator opening is higher than the motor. Let it cool off and fill it while running till it won't accept any more antifreeze. It has air in the system.

How old is the rad. cap ? Bad caps can cause alot of weird things. I like to put lower pound ones on older systems.

I have seen the little hose from the coolant tank to the radiator block up and it would not allow the radiator to refill properly.
