OT let me introduce

My first grand dog! Pure German Shepherd, named Bentley

makes me miss my Kazak - he left a spot in my heart for shepherds.

he was a "german" german shepherd, darker and don't slope down in the back in the back as much as "american" german shepherds. From that picture thought maybe yours is too?

Never knew there was a difference till I got him.

He got up to 150 pounds, and could never take the hint that he might be too big to sleep on our bed.

He was probably the dumbest german shepherd ever made, but he had a great personality.

He ran into the road one day and a friend of mine hit him - drove right over him - like real bad. I saw it all.

Not even a doubt in my mind that he was dead, but 5 minutes later he came to and was walking around like nothing happened.

Cost me hundreds in x-rays and tests - all just to confirm he was perfectly fine.

But that was him - big dumb oaf - always doing something stupid and costing me money - but always a completely faithful best friend.

Years later he started having seizures and - as docile and friendly as he normally was - he'd be completely vicious and aggressive when he came out of the seizure.

I'm not the least bit afraid of dogs - but I'll tell you - 150 pound shepherd coming at you with that distinctive shepherd bark and snarl - it'll get the adrenaline flowing.

10 minutes later he'd always re-gain his bearings and he'd be whimpering and, I believe, apologizing.

He was still young and healthy, but the seizures were totally unpredictable and random, and I had young kids - broke my damn heart to do what I had to do.

In fact, hurt bad enough that I never replaced him.

Been a while - but your picture's got me thinking now...

I'm sure you've got some great years ahead of you with that dog. I've had a lot of other dogs, but shepherds really are a special breed.

Except for two years between the last one and the current one, we've had G.S.'s here for more than 40 years. Used to be plenty of them around... had to look for about 2 months to find the latest one. (plenty at shelters, but since I won't let them inside my house, I'm not a "good candidate" to adopt a dog from a shelter...makes me mad!)

One of my neighbor gets his German Shepards as "washouts" from a nearby Police K-9 training school. The pups are ussually a year old or older when he gets them but they are nice dogs, trained to commands and they are used to being around people. The dogs often get hip problems as they get older and then he gets a different dog.
