Can some one tell me what year Chev went to a 12 volt system,and was all 12 volt car systems negative ground

I think 12v for Chevy was in 1955. It is neg ground as it was before. Not sure if Chrysler went neg ground in 55 or not.

Ford cars went 12V neg ground in 56. 55s were 6V pos ground. I had one of each.

Ford changed in '56 and Chevy changed in '55.

Chevy went 12V neg ground in 55 with 6V still an option. Ford 1956, Mopar 1956. Some big Cars like Cadillac and Oldsmobile were 12V already in the late 40's

A neighbor said he had a 6V 55 chevy pickup, but I never asked him if it was an early 55 which was identical to the 54 pickup, or a late 55 with the new body style.

I don't remember any 12V Mopar with pos ground, so I suspect they went neg ground when they switched to 12v like Ford.
