Looking to buy an air compressor for my garage. Is
there one out there they make that isn"t so loud..It
seems the ones with motor and compressor as 1 unit
are as loud as a 747 jet..

Stay away from "oil free" because those are the loud ones. I have a Husky "oil free" and basically have to wear hearing protection while it fills up in my garage.

I have a Coleman that is belt driven. It is an up right compressor with wheels. It was about $400. I bought it at TSC on sale. It has been a great compressor. I keep it in the house garage.

I have a direct drive carry around compressor. We use it to run nail guns with. It is noisy as heck. I will never own another direct drive compressor.

belt drive
the slower the compressor turns the quiter it will be, can add mufflers etc for a small reduction in noise
Quincy is top of the line, not cheap
best bet is an outbuilding/seperate room attached to your garage or shop

One thing that helps with the noise is to put the compressor behind a wall of sorts. My shop compressor sits under a shelve and then has a wall under it. Doing that might also is the tank explodes help slow the pieces down some. Plus if you insulate it that helps even more. My compressor is old and belt drive like one you would see in a tire shop or gas station of old

Screw types are quiet but very expensive; several thousand dollars. I just bought a vertical, belt-driven, two cylinder Puma and it is reasonably quiet. Not a two stage but two cylinder. Less vibration with a two cylinder. Oil-less types good for portable use such as nailers; etc. Don't like them for stationary installations that generally receive heavier use and don't require the light weight.

I have a craftsman direct drive that uses oil that is LOUD from new..everyone has to clear out of garage..from what I gather I will have to spend another $150 with belt drive to lower noise level..

We had numerous brands over the years in my tire shop. The quietest and most dependable were the type 30 Ingersoll Rand with the 60 gal tank.

I have A 60 gal.speedaire. I have had it A long time. I did have to patch one little hold in the bottom of the tank last year. That was no problem. Not too noisy.

This is a MDT/McKesson dual coplemetic compressor out of my old dental office. Has a dryer unit built in and does a great job. Set the pressure to 110 lbs and it is extremely quiet. Made filters for the intake to suppress noise.
Sometimes you can see these for sale. Pricey, though if they are on medical/dental equipment sites.
Heads have crankcases that hold 30 wt nd oil.
From what I hear, these things last forever.
