Metal detecting

Any of you have a metal detector and spend much time doing it? I am thinking about switching hobbies since 9v batteries are cheaper and more redly available than ammunition around here. Looking at a Bounty Hunter quick draw II.

I have been metal detecting for over 20 years. My father used to be a dealer in the late 80"s and early 90"s for Fisher metal detectors. I have used/owned Garrett"s, Fisher, White"s, Tesoro, Minelab, and Bounty Hunter. All have there good and bad points. I like White"s and Tesoro. The Bounty Hunter you mentioned is a mid grade one in there line. For average detecting should serve you well.

Jdb,
I have a Big Bud Pro Bounty Hunter. I bought it back in 1986 or 1987. I paid $600 for it. I looked at some new ones a few months ago and you can get a good one for about $300 now. New technology too! I found a lot of items at the large camp sites at camp grounds. Many people think you"ll find coins at old farm places, but like my mom and dad always said farmers never had any money years ago. I used my detector in a friends fenced yard in town and found all sorts of coins. Some silver quarters. I held on to all my silver that I found with my metal detector for almost 17 years and cashed it all in about two months ago. I got 20 times face value for each sliver coin.
Old churches is a good place to go too. Years ago they had church picnics at the church and played bingo with pennies and dimes. Then you had the congregation after mass that always stood outside the church and would talk while rattling their change in their pockets. IF you buy a metal detector you"ll have fun with it. Don"t get discouraged if you don"t find any thing for the first few times you take it out. It takes a while to learn its sounds, just like a new born baby...LOL! My booklet said, "If you"re not digging up any trash you"re missing a lot of good finds".

This farm is 260 acres that were right in the middle of a civil war site so always something to find here. One of the grand sons goes out quite often and never know what he will dig up. really interesting.

Would a metal detector find a shotgun in a stud wall? Rumor has it that my Grandfathers defective shotgun was placed between the studs and sheeted over, about 1930. The house is going to be torn down soon and I would like to find it first!

I just bought my first metal detector, a fisher
f-2 which is an entry level machine. ive had it out 3 times so far ive come up with a lot of coins in my front yard my daughter found a silver ring. down at the farm its been a lot of relics like the seat off grandpas horse drawn planter. a tooth off of dads old john deere crawler. we are having a lot of fun so far discovering "treasure". a great hobby while the tractors of in the shed.

"Would a metal detector find a shotgun in a stud wall?"

Yes it would. Might have to play with it for a bit to learn the difference between something like that and the rows of nails in the lath and studs.
If you know someone who has experience with one, that should be fairly easy.
