Soon to be our 43rd anniversary and the better half suggested we get an e-reader, since we"re both avid readers. She says run it by the YTMag folks for their opinions. Any comments regarding either one, and which models? TIA

Can't speak to the Nook, but my daughter gave me a Kindle Fire for Christmas this year. It rarely leaves my side. It is not really a dedicated reader, but more of an access point to the whole amazon ecosystem. Can do plenty of shopping from the sofa. I do read magazines and newspapers on it as well as some books I have purchased. Sometimes watch a movie or show on it with ear buds after the wife is asleep. Do plenty of web surfing on it as well. Was a gift that I really appreciate.

JMS,

My wife is a retired high school English teacher who is a maniacal reader. (I read a book one time.)

She is on her third Kindle (they don't like water or Coke when it's poured on them). I don't know which model she has right now, but it is the "back-lighted" model which enables her to read her books while in the dark.

My son has a Nook. I don't know why, but my wife really prefers her Kindles. She buys hers through Amazon and supposedly gets some kind of reduced cost. Amazon puts ads on her Kindle, but they only appear when she is out of a book. They are not at all interuptive to her reading.

Good luck on your choice.

My wife and three kids each have a Kindle. Despite all of them getting treated very gently, they've all had to be sent back for warranty work. My kids are all on their replacement Kindle. My wife sent her's back and got a replacement, and then the replacement crapped out. After that, they wouldn't send her a replacement, even though the original warranty was still in place. The reloading of all your material was seamless, but they have not been reliable at all.

The girls got me a Kindle Fire for Christmas so far no problems.I'm using it right now.I read a lot so it is pretty handy. Have down loaded a few books and magazines. Wished they would gotten me one a few years ago but I'm old school and didn't want it now I use it all the time

A few years back I was weighing which one to get, The Kindle or the Nook. I finally went with the Nook because
it had the Adobe book platform which supported me being able to get free books from my county library. At the time the Kindle didn't support what my library offered.
I liked it so much I went from the black/ white version to color.
But with that being said, my brother has a Kindle and loves it.

I bought a kindle keyboard and then was given a kindle fire for christmas a couple years ago. I don't have any experience with a nook but I really like my kindles. If you want it just as a reader I like the keyboard version better. It's easier to read even outside and the battery lasts longer. I end up using the fire mostly though and it does alot more of course. I can't read it outside because the sun seems to glare off it but it does have a backlit screen so you can read at night. I live around 20 some miles to the closest bookstore and with the kindle all I have to do is buy it and it's downloaded in less than a minute and I can start reading. It will make the print larger which seems to very handy the older I get. If I don't know a word it has a built in dictionary that you can just put your finger on the word and a definition pops up. It will keep your place if you quit reading or you can bookmark a certain page you like. I have a John Deere tractor book on mine that I keep the serial numbers bookmarked on that is handy. If your not sure you will like a book you can download a free sample of a chapter or so. Amazon will keep track of the books you buy and will give you suggestions you might like based on your books. You don't have books laying around that you've already read taking up room. The books used to be cheaper than paperbacks but enough people are using them now that they are pretty close to the same price now. Last I heard Barnes and Noble wasn't doing that well so I would stay away from the Nook but thats just me. Just a warning though you can't buy books from Barnes and Noble and put them on a Kindle or vice versa. You are pretty much tied to their books. That being said the Kindle does have a couple more places you can buy books from that are sorta tied in with Amazon. Overall I really like mine and read out of it everyday. I haven't bought a regular book in quite awhile. I would go to Amazon and look in their Kindle store and see what books they have you might like. They don't have every book ever written by no means but they do have alot.

Wife has Nook, younget Kindle Fire HD. I prefer the Kindle!! Its more like a little laptop than a reader. Of course the Nook my wife has is a couple of years old, son got his Kindle for Christmas.

My wife recieved a basic Kindle as a retirement gift. It is a fun little toy for playing word games and such, but we both agree it will never replace an honest to gosh REAL printed book.

I guess we are thinking about differen't things. Kindle was something you did to start a fire, Nook was something you went to town on Saturday night to look for!

Wife has a Kindle and loves it.She reads outside in the summer all the time , no problems at all. Some books are free.

I was having the same problem with the choice between the two. Finally someone suggested a Nexus 7. I bought one for $250.00. I loaded both the Kindle and the Nook app. So it does both. It is a tablet so it does some real computer things.

I love mine but the case is expensive.

Battery is great.

Go to your local library & ask if they give instruction classes on both. We did & bought the Kindle. You can get free books both from the library & on line.

Since you mention "e-reader" may I assume you're looking at the Kindle Paper White vs. the Nook Simple Touch? Amazon has a better library for the Kindle and you can "lend/borrow" books with it. Both have amazing battery life. The Kindle Fire series and the Nook HD series are close to a tablet. Between those two, get the Fire. For Christmas 2011 one of our son's wanted a Nook HD. He used it for about a month before trading it in for a Fire. The cost of materials was higher at B&N over Amazon's prices. That same son gave us a Nexus 7 for last Christmas. We have the Amazon Store and Kindle app loaded on it so we can buy books from Amazon. The Nexus 7 is a true tablet, in the same price range as the Fire's and HD's, and beats the Apple Mini-pad in every aspect.

So, my vote is Kindle Fire for a straight E-Reader and the Nexus 7 for a tablet.

Bought a Kindle Paper White for SWMBO for Christmas. She uses it and likes it but seems to spend as much or more time reading off her laptop. I tried using the Kindle thing once or twice. They aren't for me. I'll take paper or a nice big monitor. But, Amazon does have lots of cheap books you can get. The down side to that was that places like Amazon killed off Borders, which IMHO was a criminal act worthy of death. I loved Borders and I really miss it. There's nothing for me to do when we go to the big city anymore.

We have a Nook Color and a Samsung Galaxy Tab (w/3G connection through Verizon). The wife likes the Nook since it's more tablet-like than the plain readers but not too complicated. I like the Tab since it is a tablet and small enough to carry around and a decent reader. We aren't big readers since that's what we do for our work, so outside of there we do other things. MIL has the Nook Simple Touch and likes it. I do like the screen on it for reading. I'd advise you try out the readers and a tablet and get what you like. I know Amazon makes it real easy to spend money on their site, B&N isn't too far behind them. I do like the new Nook HD+ too, looked at it at the local Target. If I was to update my tablet I'd be seriously looking that way too.
