300 corn picker

Hi guys,
I know this isn't directly tractor related, but your infinite wisdom is much appreciated. I am looking at a John Deere 300 corn piker with a 244 head. Can you tell me the good and bad about this picker. Most importantly do John Deere dealers carry many parts for them? I have a well used New Idea 12 roll husking bed that I am not happy with how much corn it shells on the ground. I have done everything I can to prevent it. I was told you will have much less shelled corn on the ground with a John Deere 300. Thanks. I appreciate your input

We bought a 300 two years ago for the same reason,to much shelled corn on the ground. We have been happy with it so far, last fall we put the 244 head on the 3940 chopper and made a silage bag of snaplage.Check the condition of the brushes over the husking rolls as they are very overpriced from Deere. If they are in real bad shape the corn and trash piles up and does not move down into the wagon elevater,a few damaged ones should still work ok.

You should consider a 234 international mounted picker. I have used one 30 years and they do a awsome job. I had a 300 husker for 4 years and it did a nice job to. The 234 will run circles around the 300. I use it in green corn to open up for chopping. Then after corn silage is done then do snaplage with it and works great.

Parts are going to depend on your nearest super store I suppose. That's something that there weren't many of. Just like the 700 grinder mixer that I had. Getting parts for that one was the begining of the end of the relationship between me and Mother Deere.

I considered that for myself but a mounted picker is very dirty and dusty to run and takes a day to take on and off.(We had a Deere 237 for years)A red picker would cause me lots of problems on this 100% green farm.LOL Where would I ever find the brackets to put one on a 3020? The pull type is nice that you hook up and go rather than tieing up a tractor.

Here in WI,MN and Iowa there were alot of 300 pickers but you are right that there will be very few parts in stock for them.We have a parts book and use JD parts website to get the part numbers then just call our dealer and tell them what to order because like you said the customer service of the mega dealers is terrible unless you buy all new stuff from them(which we do not,our newest tractor is a 1977).

There are other pickers that will pick at a faster ground speed but the 300 will do well in the 4 MPH range which is where most harvest operations tend to run. I don't think in terms of parts that one brand is significantly better than another. I recall the local AGCO dealer saying years ago that the picker parts business had greatly declined from what it was about 1990. Unless you are in an area that sees a heavy amount of picker usage chances are you will have to order most parts when needed regardless of brand. All things considered I would go with the Deere.
