Californa/Flordia Strawberries

I've seen the same thing. In the Pacific Northwest, we called them styrofoam berries, but the produce folks are now urging us to try them again, they actually have some flavor. Still not as good as local berries, but those don't come on until June, and then only for a couple of weeks.

There is a variety of berry called Honeoye. They are super juicy and dark red with real taste. They are not hardy shipping berries, though. They can't take a lot of handling.

Allstar is a hard, easy to handle berry. They are small, but packed with taste. Those varieties we had 20 years ago. Used to have about 8 acres of strawberries. WAY WAY too much work...

I bet by now, they have been able to breed the same qualities into the early irrigated varieties.
