ford 4000 hydraulic lift piston seal

had problems with the lift pulled the cover off and found that the pin that adjusts the draft control fell out so i decided to rebuild the unit. All is well except the new flat seal or ring that sits in front of the large o ring on the piston appears to be short, what i mean is the old one closed up or touched ends the new one is open by a 1/8 of an inch. Has anyone had this problem? or is the new style just that its now open on the end insted of closed... thanks...

Always, always mention if you have a 1962-64 4 cylinder 4000 or a 1965-75 3 cyl 4000 though in this case those seals are about the same.
There should be a rubber oring and a leather backing washer.
Is the leather washer split? It should not be.
Generally you have to boil them in a pan of water to soften them enough to stretch over the piston.

sorry its a 3 cylinder 4000 gas... large O ring and a plastic ring looks like a piston ring... nothing leather looking and have not seen it in any of the kits??
