Corned Beef-Pardon my ignorance

The type my mom always bought is also seasoned with pickling spices. It has a unique flavor because of it. I am not really fond of it - but it is ok in Reuben sandwhich about every 2-3 years.
 
I knew it was brisket, but didn't know the origin of the "corned" part.

Tammy's mother bought one by mistake and tried to fix it like regular brisket.

She has never lived that down. It was an interersting meal.
