TO-30 and rotary mower

So a friend has a TO-30 and he picked up a rotary mower. He got an adapter to go from the TO-30 (which I believe is 1 1/8" pto) to the mower PTO (which I believe is 1 3/8"). Problem is that it seems too weak and just twists and gets destroyed. Is a 5' rotary mower to much to ask of a TO-30 or should he be looking someplace else? Most of the stuff he mows is less than 12" tall in a small orchard of his.

Thanks for any ideas.

My dad ran a 5 foot brushhog on an 8N with a 1 1/8 to 1 3/8 adapter for quite a few years. Replaced the adaptor with an overrun adapter because the splines were getting loose, and the overrun is much better anyhow. And that is cutting fairly big brush most of the time. I would say you either got cheesy adapters, or something is wrong with the mower deck. A TO-30 should have no problems with that deck.

If he is using just an adapter (and not an overrun clutch), I have heard many instances where the adapter is just too flimsy to hold up. I have run the override clutch on my T020 with a 5 ft. rotary mower for years and never had a problem - even with some brushy fields.

I agree with 69gmc. I run a 6" finish mower with an 8n. Had one cheap adapter twist. No problem with the overrun adapter. Make sure your drive shaft isn"t too long with the overrun adapter and there is nothing wrong with the mower. My twist came from going down hill, not heavy grass.

When I started mowing I had a TO 20 about the same thing as a 30. I had problems like you mentioned. I found a stronger made adapter which worked ok. Another thing that can be done is get the complete shaft with the larger spline. They just pull out, and are easy to change. Might go to the Harry Ferguson forum, and smeone who knows what model uses the shaft with the larger spline.Stan
