After Margery was striken with NPH I was lost. I had had a lot of experiences in my life and wanted my childen to know about them I enrolled in an on-line course in writing The instuctor was Dr.Eva Shaw The Course name was write you life story. This has geen going on for eight years so some of my writing is current some older. This is eh firt story I wrote Under the handle "THIS OLD FARMER' Has Paul Harvey always said "You know have the rest of the story"

THIS OLD FARMER

This Old farmer was born in a farm house in Iowa the year of the big bank failures. My father was a dairyman and produced and processed milk. He was progressive thus I was exposed to many fascinating events. We never suffered the horrors of the depression. We raised a huge garden, raised fruit and the grandmother, aunt and mother preserved everything. We butchered our own hog and beef. I remember wrapping apples in news paper and storing them in a barrel in a cool basement. Guess what, “Fresh apple pie year around.”

As I grew older I was allowed to participate in many educational projects. Perhaps the greatest lesson my parents stressed was “Be aware of your surroundings and the thing that go on around you”. I have leaned for every accident, for every failure there is a root cause.

patent by the U.S. Patent Office. I have been a speaker at State and National meetings.

I have lived my life to the fullest. Some times thing has not gone the way I liked. Other times they have exceeded my greatest hopes. There is really not failure. It is just a learning experience.

I enjoy helping young people and the breeding of fine Guernsey Dairy Cattle. While doing all these things my wife was always at my side. Advising, pushing, listening, supporting me and above all loving me. We had a deal. We never went to sleep angry at one another.

It is my hope that my writing will encourage some people, give hope to others and be enjoyed by all.

Glad you are doing it Graydon. I wish my Dad had done the same thing. I do have a lot of stories, but writings would be a lot easier to pass on to my kids.

I have a spiral bound note book that my late mother filled with writings about her childhood up to the time she met my father, including how she met him. She titled it "The Way Things Were", and it's all written in longhand, not necessarily in chronological order. When she'd think of something, she'd write it down.

I've always wanted to sort it out and type it on my computer, but never seem to have the time. I know some of my cousins would be interested in copies.

Shoulda mentioned, writing has always come easy for me, plus I took English Comp and Business Communications classes in college, among others.

In the Bus. Comm. class, I spent an entire semester trying to get a rise out of the prof. While writing one homework assignment, I created a use car lot named "Ben Dover Auto Sales".

Then too, for another homework assignment, we were to write a ficticious letter to the governor of Vermont, and we could pick any name we wanted for the governor. I used "Adolph Goldberg". I think it all went over the prof's head.

My dad started writing his story. We found the first part in his personal stuff. Hope we find more. He and my uncle cut wood for a local guy. A dollar a 1000 board feet. If they trimmied the limbs, they got $1.25. Walked five miles to dances and eight miles to go swimming. Iteresting life. He lived it to the fullest too.

Thanks for sharing your wonderful history. It is interesting that you speak of Guernseys. They have declined in numbers in the last 30 years to the point where they are an endangered breed. Today's Guernseys are the least thrifty of cattle, yet they produce the finest milk of all. Keep writing and best wishes.
