Hi all, I'm leaning towards a smart phone when my old cell finally falls apart. Not sure what i will get for a make/model, but was looking for others input before i buy.
I currently run a Sanyo PRO 700, the "armored" one, it's 3 years old and getting very rough, but still works. I am fairly hard on phones, and am also wondering peoples thoughts on the different cases out there to keep the smart phones somewhat protected.
I'm not a great fan of any of the makes out there and don't think that i will use all of the smart phones abilities (i don't need to watch tv while working), but i do make a lot of phone calls during the day and i do need something that can make a loud ring...

I just got my first smart phone. I use it more than I thought I would. I just used it today to find a tractor part while riding in the truck

Making a lot of calls and a loud tone isn't enough reasons to buy a smart phone and getting a larger monthly bill then necessary.
I would compare your monthly bill you have now with your anticipated monthly bill if you choose to have the smart phone with all the capabilities that you may or may not use.
You may find you like the added features but only you will know that.

My phone's pretty dumb!
Whenever I get into a position where I need both hands and can't reach my pocket, it's gonna ring...slim

Finally got a smart phone about a month ago. I got an Android model (A razor something) had it for about two days and switched to an APPLE 4 I put it in an Otter case makes the phone big but it still slips into my back pocket easily.
I never will take full advantage of the features on it. Handy little thing, We bought a camper last week and were able to compare interest rates while sitting in the finance guys office right in front of him. Calculator right in hand to keep his figures from straying.

I used to have a pro 700 and then some other phone like it and now I have a Samsung Galaxy S2. I dropped sprint like a bad habit and went to straight talk wireless. it's pre-paid, uses everyone's cell towers and costs under $50 a month for unlimited everything. I have it set up to auto-refill from my credit card every month. Service is as good or better than anything else in my area, just last weekend we went out into the boonies and I had full signal and my friends with sprint had 1 bar or no service, needless to say they are all trying to drop sprint. One thing I will say is you really don't talk to anyone much with this company, all of your account management can be done over their website. My phone wasn't listed on their website but I could get it from walmart.com which is who it is all through anyways. they even have a sim card program so if you have a phone that is compatible with them, they will just send you a sim card to stick in it. make sure you get a good phone case to protect your phone. I am learning to be careful with my phone around equipment and wrenching, I have my phone with me all day as I'm always wheeling and dealing.

2 best reasons for a smart phone, I can take and send a good photo. good for parts, etc, getting the parts guy on the same page as you... other reason is to sync email to it, I email I lot for work and this is just wonderful, should have done it sooner.

A smart phone my not be for you than, it's like having a computer in you pocket. You can do alot more than just watch tv on it, you can find parts, check the weather, check the stock market, and sports if u like ect. You can e-mail and text from it, There are so many apps for all sorts of things. You can even go to tractor talk on one. I like my apple iPhone 3GS with a otter cover on it, I had it for 2 years now, and no problems. Like my brother was telling me the other day, after using apple iPhones why would anybody ever want to use windows again.? I can't hear mine ring over equipment thought. Good luck.

I was in your position a few weeks ago. I had decided I was gonna get a smart phone so that I could have tide tables, maintenance records and navigation on the boat. Looked at several, and ended up just getting a 7" wi-fi only tablet, a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2. Won't make phone calls, but my old dumb phone will do that, and the 7" screen means I can actually see what's on the screen and the touchscreen buttons are big enough I can hit 'em. Spent a couple hundred bucks on it, but saved the monthly cell data plan, which I figure is going to be north of $40 a month for even the cheapest plan.

I have a smart Motorola with AT&T. Was just getting used to it, then a upgrade. Now you have to unlock and push the RIGHT button just to answer someone. I miss my old flip. This one is large, yes you can see it but you have to charge it every day. If you like to push buttons(text, etc) and need the latest and greatest, go for it. I hear that the iphone or Samsung are the best.

I could not be bothered with one of these contraptions.
I have a cordless phone for if someone wants to get hold of me or i need something and I have a dig camera and a puter and that is enough allready.
I have no need to be in contact with the world 24/7/365.

Had a Blackberry. Didn't like the locking on it. would unlock in my pocket and start opening programs. Then it went haywire on me. Switched to the IPhone 4s. better locking and louder. I recomend the blackberry or Ipnone just because they are more secure agains hackers and snoopers. Android and other phones are like goodle and share their info with the government.

Forgot to mention, the iPhones have a pretty good camara in them also. The pics are not bad for a phone camara.

I was talked into an I phone (4) cuz they were outdated, and Verizon was overstocked...thus real cheap w/ 2 yr contract: .99. Problem is I found that they do a million things that I neither know how to do or care to use...hate the touch pad for texting...bout all I use it for is calls and texts...but as stated below the cam is great compared to my old flip!

Had them for years now. Couldn't do without it. It's too loud in the shop to talk on a phone so it allows me to keep in touch with the kids, my wife, and my mother who isnt in the greatest of health these days. Almost everyone at work has one so its alot easier to send a pic of what is needed or dimensions instead of walking all over the shop. They're not for everyone that's for sure and do your research before getting one. I have a Samsung galaxy note 2 its big not as big as a tablet but its big and has a stylus which I like. It's really nice to take a picture add dimensions on the picture then send it. Saves a ton of time. There's tons of free apps on the Android Market that will do about anything. I do everthing from view cnc programs to tune my banjo with it. It has an excellent camera 8mp. You can video chat on it (I've used it twice to video chat with a heating cooling tech to fix heat pumps which saved me more than the price of the phone if I would have called a tech to come out). I love mine but they are not for everyone. It's hard to get use to using a touch screen phone but I use swype to type with (you drag your finger over the keypad spelling the word it will connect the letters with a blue line then find the word you are typing). The best thing to do would be find someone thats a little tech savy to talk to and show you some stuff on it. Good luck!

I agree totally with Jay. I have a IPhone 4S with an Otter box around it, pretty close to indestructible. Only way I connect with the net. Only drawback I can see is that I can't post pictures to YT. I put mine in a shirt pocket that I can securely close (Velcro or button) when I'm in equipment even if I can't hear it ring I can feel it vibrate.

iPhone 4S and a good case is an unbeatable combination.

Otter box cases are good, but I prefer "Ballistic" brand cases. They have an extra soft rubber jacket that wraps around the back of the phone for even more protection.

I was hanging trusses last year and my phone fell out of my pocket to the concrete floor below. It took about a 10 foot fall, followed by a 5 Foot bounce. The phone suffered no damage at all.

i have the Casio Commando its shock proof and water proof just the thing for the rough guy. drop it on a rock and it slides into the pond don't worry it will take.
i also have Verizon.

Im checking into straight talk wireless plan no contract pay monthly at a fraction of the cost w a smart phone too..

I have the iphone 4 and if you're just going to talk on it, I think it would be a waste of money.

ATT just started "throttling" folks too, right after they up'ed the opt out fee. In other words, they'll slow your phone down when they think you've used to much data. (surfing tractor forums late at night looking for plow info).

Otterbox ain't water proof. ...that cost me an iphone already!

Rusted,

With plane phones you can't talk during take off and they are kind of pricey by the minute.

I have a flip phone.Cost $19.95.I don't text and really don't have time to surf the web during work.If you can't to talk to me I don't want to hear from you.

Frank I have the Motorola HD with AT&T as you. Have a hard rubber case lots of features I like But just the other day they changed the soft ware to the point that YOU CANNOT have speed dial from the key pad. I love to be driving down the road and just touch one number to dial someone. Is yours the same..Probably one of the Best cameras on the market I think.

I can post on my I phone u just have to wait about 2 minutes for it 2 load..

Jay, then main reason i'm thinking of a smart phone is for a good calender application, i seem to have too much on the go these days to keep it all in my head like i used too... maybe i'm getting older

I use the Iphone 4 and would hate to be without it. Don't do a lot of texting and pay for it by the text message. Love the camera especially when i can take a picture of a model number or serial number and just show the picture to the parts man. Some of the applications come in handy Lowes, Home Depot, Advanced, Autozone, Yahoo Finance, White Pages, Ebay . I have 2 applications I can match paint colors with. Weather report. It has a decent ring volume.

Loving it, John. It's been a year as of the first of this month. Shoulda done it 30 years ago, but I was broke back then.

Well than a smart phone is your puppy, least an iPhone, it has a great calender, alarm clock, stop watch, and reminders, you can set for any appointments you have. A world clock, neat to look to see time differences. It also has a notes page, like writing in a paper note pad. I also forgot to mention sattalite radio, free music, comedy or what ever you like to listen too. It will play from the phone speaker, or the ear buds, kinda like a Walkman, but no cassette tape, believe me I was skeptical of getting one to, but it has worked out great for me. It really is like a tool.

Work buys my smart phones and pays the bills. Best plan ever. Not!
All of my work email comes to my phone.
I have carried various Blackberry phones and two iPhones for close to 10 years.
I like them all, but they have a problem with battery life.
My current iPhone won't last 12 hours on a full charge most days.
Less if I use it for surfing or actually use the phone.
The BlackBerries were better on the battery, but not by much.
I currently have an iPhone 5 and an Otter Box case. No better to me than
the iPhone 4S or a Blackberry Curve. My 2 cents.

Lol, Puter, dig camara, cordless phone???????? Hahahaha,
why have 3 things when you can do it all on 1?? That makes
no sense at all. I can do all that with 1 device.

This reminds me of the all-in-one printer/scanner/fax machines.
One breaks, you're without any/all.
Or back a little further, don't put all your eggs in one basket!
Each to their own. :)

I have an iPhone now and had an android, both through Verizon. I couldn't be happier with the iPhone. It is my only phone here and the only connection to the Internet as there is no other service (other than Foolsnet). I have it set to be a hotspot to my laptop but rarely use it that way. It works very well for that, though. It is an iPhone 4 with 3G. The 4G doesn't come all the way out here anyway so I didn't need to do anything fancier.

I have dropped it many times and is none for the worse. I do have an Otterbox cover on it.

The android was the biggest waste of money ever. I will never use anything but an Apple product.

I can agree with that, but I will tell you this, my iPhone has
never had a problem so far in 2 years, I have had nothing but
problems with any puker I have ever had. Lock ups, freeze
ups, slow working, laptops power jack burns up, ect, I'm sure
the phone will go bad someday, but I like it WAY better than
any puker I have ever had.

I have a Blackberry Bold with a touch screen that was issued to me at work. Battery life is good and we use the heck out of them. Pretty nice. Works good and lots of features. They have it set up so all work email is on it and it synchronizes with my laptop at work and we can access the server as well if need be. I never thought much of getting one for myself as I thought I would never really use all the extra features. I use them more than I thought I would, but work kind of requires it. The neat thing with smart phones is all the apps you can get to do different things with. Most are free. Great plan. Company pays the bill. Can't beat that and they never ask questions about the amount of use. problem is they expect you to pick up 24/7 and that gets old.
My personal phone is an LG. For just a knock around phone I like it, but I hardly ever use it anymore as I can't stand carrying one full time let alone two.

I have an Iphone 4s with an otter box defender series case. I like the phone and the case has been Erik resistant for almost a year.

If you plan on using the app features, a smart phone is great. I use mine to calculate acreage in a field using the gps and use the gps feature for traveling. I also use it for surfing the net while on the go. You can also download an app to scan barcodes and price compare. You will use the phone features more than you think you will.

I prefer the Samsung Galaxy series and you can't go wrong with an iphone.

As far as cases, the only one to get is the otter box. It's pricey, but it is about the best to protect your phone. It's just not waterproof.

Thanks JDJimOhio. Tried posting a photo w/IPhone. Worked like a champ. I didn't realize I could choose a photo from photo gallery, thought it would need a file name.

There's a guy at work here that lives in the city but has no cell phone, no computer (so no internet access) and no cable TV. If he didn't have a (wired) phone and electricity he'd be off the grid completely. But I understand his problem, his wife is one of those hoarder types, doesn't and won't work, and he's afraid she'll go nuts on the internet or with the cable shopping channels buying even more junk they don't need. He never has anyone come to their house, he inherited a substantial amount of money from his mother and had to hide it from the wife.

Just to stay marginally on topic, I only have a ruggedized flip phone but also have a Samsung Galaxy Tab tablet with 3G on Verizon. It's handy to take on the road or use occasionally at home as a hot spot when I want higher speed internet access (have satellite internet too, but the speed is sometimes barely faster than dial up).
