Check the carb. & see what kind it is .
Walbro , Zama & the Numbers on it . Then maybe I can help you .
I have the breakdowns on Walbro & Zama s .

John in AZ.

You could also try psep.biz (Pat's Small Engine Parts) I think they have a phone number where you can discuss your problem with someone.

I don't want to discourage you, or disagree, but I have/had a differenc brand, and spent all one Saturday trying to start it. Pulled and pulled and pulled, getting madder and madder, wife came out the back door and said we're going to the Stihl dealer, and you're GOING to get a new saw. I tried to agrue, we coldn't afford it, you know..... but she really put her foot down. Best thing I could have done. Mainly becuase any kindof service and all the parts I oculd ever want, just 2 miles away. Just for me, but it really was good advice.

I can find very little info on the JD 28.

The carb itself will have make and model on it. Ant decent saw shop should be able to ID it for you and get a kit. Or you can do some looking yourself. It's probably a Walbro or Tilotson carb, maybe a Zama. The websites for those companies offer advice on IDing their carbs.

Echo makes decent saws. All the info I could find in that model indicate it's a little 30cc class model. If it's like most older Echos, whenever it doesn't run right you'll need to look beyond the carb for cracked intake boots, fuel lines, spongy fuel lines, etc. Todays fuels are terrible on older plastics.

My local mower shop had several kits in stock for my Deere 50V (mf'd by Kioritz). All the counter lady needed was the Walbro carb number.

Incidentally the 50V is a good saw. I picked up one from the curb on trash day - it needed carb work and a new clutch drum. I've been using it for about 10 years now - it starts/runs/cuts nice.

After reading your posts i took the saw apart and discovered it had more issues. As you have said fuel lines and such are shot. The saw was a freebie so it owes me nothing. I called the local deere dealer who refered me to a shop that may or may not be able to get parts. So i will check it out and see if its affordable to fix or if im better off getting a new one. If i go for a new one what would you guys recomend. Id like something with a 16" bar which is longer than the bar on this deere saw. No color wars please just a cheaper saw that would be fine for occasional use as i do not use one that often.

I quite often use a chainsaw to clean fence rows and the last few years have begun heating again with firewood. Although still useable, the 20+ year old Homelite was showing it's age and also wanted something bigger to fell larger trees rather than borrow my friends Husky or Sthil. Determined I couldn't beat the price on new Poulan so bought a Poulan pro for about $130 and have ran the snot out of it. Worked so well that I also bought a smaller Poulan for $99 to replace the Homelite which is semi-retired. No problems with either saw. Don't run ethanol gas. Friend does and has had problems with carbs/fuel lines in both of his saws. Buy cheap saws and don't use ethanol gas.

Fuel lines are an easy fix, I replace them with modern Tygon type lines that don't get affected by the alcohol so much. The carb kit shouldn't be a huge issue once it's ID'd. I'd check the boot under the carb and make sure it isn't cracked. Other than that for $30.00 or so it may run fine. If not, pick your favorite dealer and see what he's got. Used saws work fine too. Put the Deere on Ebay if you want. There may be 100 people just frothing at the mouth for a parts saw.

Be prepared with the model and serial number of the saw, then try a site called: ereplacementparts.com Most of the time what you want can be found, but occasionally they will let you down. One point though, when you locate your correct part number do another search using just that part number and it will pull up all the identical components that will interchange. Sometimes the other part numbers carry a much lower price tag because though being identical, are not sold for the same price as the "name brand" parts. You can then decide which way to go. It's the first place I check for chain saw and power tool parts and they have a tremendous inventory. Gotta order a Stihl diaphragm today....

Bob,

Theres 2 different carbs for the 50V, mine has the one you cant get the kit for, whats it call Timbro or something, and you cant switch them for some reason.

Just my two cents but I"m still using a stihl 028 I bought new in 1985. It"s a little more than I need now so I use a stihl 180 most of the time, smaller lighter. Both fire and start after couple pulls. My money"s worth on a $189 180 stihl

If ya think about getting another one, look at a Dolmar if you have a dealer around. They're a really good saw. And I agree with the rest, NO ALCOHOL gas.
