Aagghh oh nooo!

After working for weeks cuting firewood and trees out of the way so i could get my oak saw logs out,the sawmill sawed them up for someone else.Drove up there to pickup my wood and it was all gone.Claimed his son didn't see my marks they must have been on the other end.Well they were marked on both ends. They have a mountian of popular logs twice the size of a house, but no oak at all to replace mine.

Somebody made him a better offer. Give him a week to get logs in and cut to replace what he sold. You could actually charge him with theft if you were so inclined.

Where are you at in MD? There are some amish sawmills in southern pa that will saw custom lumber so cheap I dont even bother hauling logs to the sawmill anymore. I got oak 2x7 cut for $1 more than a spruce 2x8 costs at the lumber yard.

This is an amish mill in southen md.The trees came down in a storm so i was useing them. When i started the spot was dry like everywhere.Got nine out that were smaller and sold them. The big ones were to make 10x12's 20ft for a special job.

Did you size them before you took them there? Most guys use doyle scale. how many board feet of logs did you give him? I'd be livid!

I have a bunch of silver maple I was going to have cut into blocking, the sawmill offered me 10 cents per board foot for the trees and I already cut and yarded them and sized them. All they have to do is truck them away... The other offer I got was for a custom saw mill guy to cut them to 8x8 blocking and he wanted $1.35 bf to cut MY trees. It seems I am to the point where my next step is to just buy my own portable saw mill, because no one else is honest. Well, either a lack of honesty or an abundance of "shyster." Take your pick.

Harbor Freight has a portable saw mill for $2600.

As far as ethics most Amish are no better or worse than English. This one sounds like a shyster and needs someone to teach him the word honesty.

I'd tell him that he's got 15 days to replace YOUR lumber or he's going to be charged with theft & be sued. That will get some action.

The sawyer knows who he sold the logs to! If it were me I would get a lawer and and he would be getting that lumber back from who ever he sold to! Also file a claim against the buyer if at all possible! GOOD LUCK! Armand

not cool. do not give up on your lumber. make sure this cutter knows you are not a guy that will be pushed around. don't accept any of his excuses.

Start off with the assumption that all loggers are crooks. That way you'll be pleasantly surprised when you meet the one out of ten that's honest.

I really doubt he "accidentally" sawed oak logs when all the others where popular. He knew your oak logs where worth 3-4 times what his popular logs are worth.

I would make him tell you who he sold/sawed your logs too/for. I would then go and check an make sure that person actually got your logs/lumber. The saw operator could just be telling you he sawed them when he actually sold them whole for the export market. That is where most hard wood logs go now. They are not sawed into lumber here.

The fact he is Amish does not make any difference. They are honest with each other but not always us (English). I always watch when dealing with them. They can be very slippery to deal with.

You just found out why to "NEVER" leave logs at a mill. If you want them sawed have them schedule when they want to saw them. Then you take the logs to them and watch them being sawed. Haul the finished product home with you.

The best you can hope for is to have some other oak logs replace yours. You still will have lost the "value" of using your own lumber.

If he said that immediately without having to check with his son, you know for certain that he's full of it.
