O/T 2004 GMC Venture Gauges

I got a 2004 Venture van from my dad. The fuel, temerature gauge and the spedometer don't register. Is there a fuse or is it some kind of electronic gizmo that needs to be replaced?

A lot of times what happens when a dash cluster does this is the solder on the back side (side facing the gauges) of the circuit board cracks away from the little terminals of the main plug. The wire harness vibrates slightly over time and moves the little terminals soldered in the circuit board. It's like wiggling a fence post enough where the soil no longer holds the post or makes contact with it.
Our 97 Dodge Caravan did this. The dash would go dead then come back on when we would hit a bump in the road. I took the circuit board out and cleaned up the solder and terminals and used a small soldering iron and resoldered the small terminals behind the main dash wire plug.
It's worked good ever since then.
I learned this when I use to work on school buses. This happened to the IH buses quite often and a new circuit board was $300. We finally got to repairing them.

Ahh the good old GMC Dashboards of Death. Common problem with 2003-2007 GM Vehicles. Each gauge is ran by a "stepper motor" about the size of a quarter. Only solution is to have the motors replaced. You can do it yourself if your technically inclined or you can send it off to have it done. GM will charge you a pretty penny to replace the whole dash, when all that is need is those little motors.

www.kincerservice.com will replace for 129.00 and that includes return shipping to you.

I have attached a link to GM owners form about this topic. Halfway down the page is a link with step by step instructions on how to replace yourself.

You can use a scan tool to sweep test the gauges and other command functions.
I get a a cluster from Dorman,,, supply them with the present info, vin, miles, hours etc,,, it has a lifetime warranty ... On a guess yours has the classic symptoms of stepper motor failer...

I have an 04 Malibu that the gas gauge reads full when you start the car, then goes to empty after a few minutes. There isn"t any in between. Could this be a stepper motor problem?

Just did the stepper motors on a 2003 C4500 project I have here. Really pretty easy. Changed out all the dash lights too. Cost around $30 and an hour or so time.

I did pay a couple extra dollars to get the new style motors GM is using now, and not the Chinese copies.

Southern Electric in Richmond will rebuild your dash w/ new steppers on a one day UPS turnaround- had the same problem with my similar vintage HD
