OT: HS Mascots

USA Today is running a contest to decide America's most unique high school mascot. Right now they are having competitions within each state with the winners moving on to a regional contest. A friend of mine passed the info on to me because our little town is part of the MN contest. Believe it or not, we are the Awesome Blossoms of Blooming Prairie! If you guys don't have your own mascot competing I would appreciate it if you could help out and cast a vote!

My HS was the Cardinals. Not that odd but my kids are going to graduate as Pretzels. Now that is an odd one but then again we are from Idiotnoise. LOL

Maybe not so unique as you think. Google shows about six high schools and one college that are Golden Tornadoes. One high school near me.

The town I grew up in we were the Woolies.

I've always assumed because it was a milltown that had a lot of woolen mills.

I now live in a neighboring town where my kids are either Sammies or Suzies, (depending on their gender).

Some guy named Sam had something to do with founding the town ? or something (shame on me for not knowing my town history) - don't know who Suzie was, but I think it was just a made up since girls didn't want to be sammies.

770 guy,

You forgot to add that what makes the Awesome Blossom even more unique is that it is black and white (school colors)...not many flowers with that coloration. LOL>

The "Blue Hose" is the mascot name at Presbyterian College, Clinton, SC. The Scotch Irish in SC were(are) Presbyterians and presumably the mascot idea came from the Scotch habit of wearing kilts and knee high socks, or hose. Younger daughter is a graduate. Graduation ceremony is very impressive. The graduates march into the graduation area behind bagpipers in full regalia playing "Scotland the Brave."

How about the Gwinn, MI, "Model Towners". Because the town was a "model town" designed Henry Ford?. Or the Kingsford, MI "Flivvers". Another one influenced by Ford's heavy presence in the Model T days.

I remember hearing a few years ago about a school that had to quit using their Native American name so they called themselves the "Fighting Whitey's". That raised quite a stink,so I don't know if they still use it or not.

Fredericktown- Freddies. Just down the road from your Whippets. A Freddie is a large muscular cardinal.

How about my old HS, The Kernels here in the Corn Palace city of Mitchell. We also had a baseball team named the "Cobs".
Too EAR--ly for those.
You would be "ammaized" at all the corn hype here.

Don't forget the Orofino, Idaho "Maniacs"- school is next to the state mental hospital. I googled it to see if political correctness had caught up with them, but they're still the Maniacs.

The colors are a natural defense mechanism... if that flower had been some "pretty" color I think it would have gone extinct long ago! Did you do some research to find that out, or were you already familiar with the Awesome Blossoms?

Was never in sports... but still, once upon a time, was an Awesome Blossom.

Any yes, a flower wearing tights of any other color would just have been torture for the teams. LOL.

Did they win the mascot contest? I voted for them a bunch of times.
