Rotating back end of GM 10-SI alternator

I'm re-wiring my 1958 D-17 Allis. I'm using an alternator off a 1974 Chevy pickup L6 engine that had the alternator mounted on left side. The 2 wire plug and wires stick outside of radiator shell/hood/tractor frame profile. Could I just take out the 4 bolt/screws of alternator end frame and rotate it up 90 degrees with the alternator already installed without messing anything up inside the alternator?
Maybe obsessive, but I'd feel better about not having those wires sticking out to be snagged.
Thanks for any advice or enlightenment. Jim.

Jim - you can "re-clock" it like you asked, but I think the brushes might give you a minor problem. If I remember right, there's a hole that you insert a wire in to hold the brushes in position. It's simple, and you'll see how it works as you get into it.

Some claim you can carefully split a Delco Si series alternator enough to reclock it without losing a brush off the rotor sliprings.
I have never been able to do that, always had to split it totally, repin the brushed and dreassemble it clocked the way you need it.

REMEMBER!!! Split it between the front aluminum case half and the steel stator ring, not between the rear half and the stator ring or you will wreck the stator leads.

Also If you need to pin the brushes and use a metal wire, MAKE SURE you remove the wire before installing and powering the alternator.

Many better quality brush sets use a nylon pin to hold the brushes. Accidently Leaving the non conductive nylon pin in place when reinstalling the alternator and powering the #1 regulator will cause no harm. With a metal pin in place, a dead short is created that will instantly destroy the regulator or inline diode.

Jon,
Describes everything you need. I have reclocked and disassembled many. I like to use straightened paper clips to hold the brushes.

A 10SI is one of the easiest things to take apart and reassemble. Once you have done one, its a piece of cake.

I always use a toothpick for a pin in the brushes. This won't short the brushes IF you should forget to remove it. Except for the brushes, reclocking a 10si is super easy.

Take the four case bolts out, separate the stator from the front cover and turn to the right position. IF you're careful and just loosen the stator with out separating to much might not need to pin the brushes.
