John Deere 730 Startup

1st..CHECK oil levels in BOTH engines...

Tractor transmission in Neutral.
Open the fuel shut-off for the Pony engine ( on the dash)..
Crank the Pony engine, using the choke to get it started (might need to tease the pony throttle too).
Allow the Pony to warm up enough to run well at reduced throttle, before engaging it..
Reduce the Pony engine RPM , Pull the De-Compression lever of the Big Engine and EASE the Pony Engagement lever back to engage the Pony and turn the Big Engine..Open the throttle of the Pony engine..
Watch for good Oil Pressure on the oil gauge for the Big Engine..
Once oil pressure is up, release the De-Compression lever and advance the Diesel throttle to above Idle throttle and it should start..
Reduce the Pony throttle AND turn the fuel OFF to the Pony engine..
NOW, the Important part...!!
WATCH for the RED light to come ON and SHUT the Pony Ignition OFF..
Hope everything goes well for you..

Ron.

I've seen them and even ran a couple, but have never started one, which lever is De-Compression and which one is pony engagement? Chris

BushogPaPa, That is the best advice [way] to start them that i have seen.So many times i see guys start the pony than bang the big engine lever and kill the pony.I was at a show last fall and watched a guy do that four time's. It almost hurt to watch them.I wanted to give my 2 cent's but there was three of his buddy's standing around .They were much younger than I am so I figured they would soon get it.

Good advice, except the 730 does not have a manual fuel shut off. It is done automatically with an oil pressure activated shut off that is similar to a gas engined tractor. Mike

I was not aware of that change...I had always heard there were no changes except fr the sheet metal on the 730..
Then, I guess you are always stuck with a carburetor full of fuel every time the Pony shuts down..????
I do not like that idea..

Ron..

Of the 2 levers to the left of the steering wheel...
The 1st is De-Compression and the Far Left one is the Pony Engagement lever...

Ron..

What is the RED LIGHT for?

I started and used one some when I was about 11 or 12 yrs. old. I can't remember the red light. I watched the video but never saw the red light come on.
