You guys see the story in Sefner,FL. about a sink hole that formed under his bedroom and sucked him down while he slept. They think the hole may be 20 to 100 ft. deep which they can't even get to the guy because they fear it will swallow the entire house. http://news.yahoo.com/florida-man-feared-dead-sinkhole-swallows-him-015434162.html

We talked about it at supper table last night. We just can't imagine how the floor of his bedroom would sink without the walls collapsing or something.

It is a concrete slab house with block outer walls, don't know about the inner walls. Probably very common in termite country. Apparently no re-bar in the slab! A few rods might have saved him.

so what is the sinkhole? just a hole, or a collapsed old mine shaft or cave or what what made a bedroom only size hole 100 ft deep?

I'm familiar with sink holes but not that bad. I once lived in Cairo, Illinois where it was between two rivers and in flood season, seep water would wash out sand out from under the soil layer and create a void. Then the ground would collapse. Here is one of the streets which collapsed.
