Quiz- Where was I?

Just got back from a business trip- Here's a pic from my 37th floor hotel room. Extra points if you can name both carriers! Took about 400 pics if you want to see more!

Your in San Diego. The carrier that is underway is the USS Carl Vinson, CVN70. I can't see the hull number one at the dock, but the shape of the island, to me, looks like it's the USS Nimitz, CVN 68. If I'm wrong and it's not the Nimitz, then it should be the USS Ronald Reagan, CVN 76.

San Diego for sure. The carrier in port looks like the USS Midway. The number on it is 41.On the other side of the bay is MCRD San Diego. Being from the midwest, I've only been there once and that was 40 years ago but I stayed for 3 months, lol.

If they are currently commisionned carriers, they look awful vernerable sitting there.. Get them out to sea where they belong!

If they are de-commissioned carriers, then tell us more about them. It would be cool to know.

The Midway is a museum these days. You can google earth it and move around on the flight deck. I don't know about the other ship.

I get to see these ships pretty regularly. Quite a sight. Kitty Hawk, Ranger,Independance, Constellation and John C Stennis.

Above is a link to the page that tells a bit about them.

I stand corrected. My memory of 40 years ago is apparantly not what I thought. If the ship in port is not the Midway, which one is it?

A second look and I can see a 4 on the island, but no other number. Given that CV 41 is the Midway, and it's supposed to be in San Diego also, then I'd say your right on with that one.

I say San Diego.
I agreed, get them out to sea and not in port where a nut-job could hit them with an artillery piece.

Artillery piece???? Gee now there is something that you can buy on every street corner. Then so easy to transport and find ammo for!

Far more of a danger of someone shooting an RPG at it. Or a sniper attack on the deck hands. But for the most part terrorest are smarter than that. They figured out after the Marine Barracks in Lebenon and the Cole that Americans don't get overly excited about a terror attack against members of the Armed Forces, soldiers are supposed to go in harms way, heck the Ft Hood shooting is "work place violence".....nope way better tragets than a ship they have little chance of sinking that will get way more news coverage.....like the Worlds Trade Center.

Besides, they gotta dry dock those things sometime.

I don;t know which ship is at the dock, but it looks like a couple F4 Phantoms on the deck, so it's gotta be a museum piece since they're my age!

San Diego. Midway closeed. Took tour year ago in Dec when son graduated MCRD spent most of day on it and missed a lot. A guy I work with did several tours on it. Liked to have gotten killed when plane crashed on deck back in 70s.

I was just on deck a few weeks ago. I'd like to go back and see more of it. Was there for hours and didn't see a fraction of it. Especially if you check out every plane or visit with the volunteer veteran guides on board. Lots of stories to hear and history to learn.

Rick, you must have missed the program. When I got discharged from the Army they gave each of us a M109 Paladin and as much 155 HE and WP rounds as we wanted.

It was indeed San Diego. What a beautiful city. If I was ever forced to live in the screwed up state of California, this is where I'd be.

It was quite an experience to watch the Carl Vinson leave port. Being from the midwest, it's not something I'll probably ever see again. We were on the Midway at night- our group of about 2500 had it to ourselves from 6:30 to 10:30 Monday evening. A great meal on the flight deck, with tours and access to the simulators.

Only had 5 days there- would sure like to go back. There's plenty to see and do. My 24 year old son was able to go with us. I don't get to spend much time with him anymore, so it made the trip really memorable.

I for one would love to see more pictures from the midway. I spent the better part of a year on her back in 74 75. I was a jet engine mechanic on A6 Intruders and spent part of the time as a final checker on the flight deck. About 2 years earlier I went through boot camp across the bay at MCRD. Love the pics. Thanks.
