Woodpecker Damage Picture

Last week I was looking for some pics of a tree I had in the woods and I found the good pic! While in the woods on the 4 wheeler........there were huge wood chips all over.......here is what I saw!!

you might call it damage, but the tree was allready dead, i've never saw woodpecker holes in live wood...

That's a strange looking hole... must have been some good bugs inside! Almost look like a mortise hole. ;)

It must have been the way the grain came out..there was a humongus pile of chips..surprised I didn't get a closeup of the chips but here is what I have.........

(quoted from post at 15:04:58 02/27/13) That tree still had some leaves on it in the spring...it was not dead at the time.
And I will add, their little cousins called Sap Suckers will kill or at minium stunt healthy saplins.

I've seen a lot of woodpecker holes in live trees. I've cut live trees for lumber and found out they were hollow and full of ants, that what the birds are after.

I had the same thing in the side of my house last year till I snuck
up on a couple of them. The Painter said he didn't know if they did
as much damage to the side of the house as I did with the Bennelli
12 gauge.

The hole that a woodpecker has drilled in one of the brances in my one tree is not as fancy as that one as what he has done looks like a 40 MM hole over half way thru the branch . I will try and get a picture of it and post later.

You probably have one of these in your area. We had one here a few days ago I posted a picture, but it was blurred. Hal
PS; They make a loud noise too.

Neighbour cursed them attacking his house. I told him they were after bugs which he said wasn't possible. I saw him later that summer tearing the siding off as there was a pillow sized bees nest near where the woodpecker was.

Back when I was an urban youth, if you really felt low of a person
he was referred to as a "yellow bellied sap sucker". We had no
idea what that meant but it really sounded like a good tongue
lashing.

Here in N. TX. I know what that means. Every winter they invade
me and try to kill my trees. They like oaks especially and in the
smaller trees they are deadly. Later on the Downy Woodpecker
visits but he is non destructive.

On birds, in 30 years I never saw a New England Blue Bird down
here. In the last few years they are quite regular and now I have
about 5 families that visit annually.

I learned that they like an isolated house, single, facing East, on
a long pole and located where it is quiet.

Did so and have families. The other day they came through here
and the hens went through my houses looking them over and
deciding if it was suitable. They left, I guess continuing
migration for awhile and will be back in the spring. I think the
blue feathers are the most beautiful blue I have ever seen. The
combination of blue, cinnamon breasts, and light gray
undercarriage is truly stunning.
