Throwing out good food

If I where in charge I close the shelter for a few days and post the Health departments address as the new location for a free meal.

Totally ridiculous example of the nanny state and some individual in the health dept. on a power trip.

What I mean is the meat was different than they were use to. I guess they were never taught to clean off their plates.

Another example of the damages entitlements do. Not only does the person who complained about being fed venison feel they are entitled to a free meal, but they feel it should be the meal of their choosing. Maybe they should get a job, make some money, and go to a restaurant where there is a menu. They could pay some taxes, too, while they are at it.

The govt guy must be joking. Protect there health. Most of the ones I have met at shelters. Are there for the free meal. After a day of digging through dumpsters, sucking down MD 20/20 and smoking.

Same thing many Katrina ""Victims"" did at the time, whined about beans and rice, gumbo and jambalaya, wanted fast food and pizza. I wouldn"t let any of them eat with my dogs, that is if the dogs didn"t run them off first.

A local trucking company tried to give away a load of frozen pizza's that were in a truck that rolled over. The local food pantry and school
both refused them. They said everything had to be approved through the state. The pizza's went to the landfill.

They should have just called the local rendering plant, never mind the dumpster and clorox thing. They would have come and taken it away and used it for meat and bone meal.

As long as they post that the meat is venison I don't see a problem. It is their choice whether they decide to eat it or not.

In my state (MN) the DNR runs a program so you can donate your deer to the food pantries/shelters. You have to drop it off at an inspected processor, though.

Well, now we know just who has the mental problems you referred to! And whoever complained should NOT be allowed back inside the place! Let him learn what it is really like to be hungry!

Yep sad that has to happen all the time. Years ago at night when places like McDonald's where closing for the night they would bag up all the left over food and set it out in the dumpster and it was still safe to eat but now days they have to mess it up so the homeless can not come and get free food. Most of it is due to lawyers

A friend had some extra hay on a trailer he wanted to donate to the local big time university for their llama and alpaca research herd. Was going to even haul it over there and unload it for them. Only about 50 bales but it was 50 they didn't have before. They couldn't accept it either, had to be authorized through multiple layers of bureaucrats. He said the heck with that and took it home.

johnB posted [pics for today], i wounder if the b-s would have been the same about the left over food, slopping it to the hogs,,,lol check out his post if you dont know what i talking about.

I emailed the Louisiana Department of Health & Hospitals with a complaint about the situation.

The following is the response I got. It appears someone has a personal vendetta against venison.

"We received your inquiry about our recent health inspection in Shreveport and wanted to address your concerns. The Department of Health and Hospitals protects the public's health, and enforces the law (State Sanitary Code) to ensure safe food is served in restaurants, grocery stores, shelters and other places. We apply the same rules to all retail food establishments in Louisiana and afford the same protections to all members of the public.

In January, we received a complaint about deer meat being served at Rescue Mission in Shreveport. Our health inspectors investigated promptly and discovered Rescue Mission did have deer meat obtained from hunters, and deer meat is not permitted to be served in a shelter, restaurant or any other public eating establishment in Louisiana. Although the meat was processed at a slaughterhouse (Bellevue) that is permitted by the Louisiana Department of Agriculture to prepare and commercially distribute meat obtained from approved farms, deer are not an approved meat source to be distributed commercially. And because hunters brought the deer to the slaughterhouse, there is no way to verify how the deer were killed, prepared or stored. All of those factors present potentially harmful situations that could cause serious or even fatal foodborne illnesses. Because the meat was potentially unsafe, our health inspectors ordered it destroyed, in accordance with the law. Bleach was poured over the meat as an extra precaution so that animals would not eat it from the dumpster and become sick or die. This is a process called “denaturing,” which is standard procedure for these situations.

While we applaud the good intentions of the hunters who donated this meat, we must protect the people who eat at Rescue Mission, and we cannot allow a potentially serious health threat to endanger the public. The State Sanitary Code laws exist to protect all residents of our state, and while sometimes these laws may not be popular, they allow us to ensure the public's health and safety, and must be followed. If you would like to learn more about the State Sanitary Code or what health inspectors are responsible for in Louisiana, I encourage you to visit www.eatsafe.la.gov to learn more".

They do have a point there, but I suspect that the shelter has been feeding venison for a long long time with no ill effects.

While they got caught and the letter of the law needs to be enforced, they should take a closer look at their policies and regulations and change them.

Unfortunately, the laws were made by people who think meat comes from the grocery store, and "People EAT deer? EEEEEEEEW!"

These are supposedly open-minded, progressive people too. Betcha if you fed them a nice venison steak and told them it was prime Angus beef, they'd gobble it up and ask for seconds. Tell them it was deer, and they'd induce vomiting.

mkirsch- I'm one 'those' people. I can't stand the flavor of deer. Just got in a few minutes ago from riding the tractor while checking fences. Passed within 20 feet of a few deer and thought "Wow, I could even hit these with a pistol".

I love squirrel, rabbit, dove, quail, etc. H3ll. I've even eaten bobcat, coyote and beaver.

As for deer, I'll shoot'em, gut'em and process them. I've tried every way under the sun to get rid of that flavor to no avail. I wish I could find a way because I have an unlimited supply of venison.

Goose,
Always love it when our govt is there to protect us.

Reminds me of a story my friend told me: His brother works in a school district culinary program. They had a power failure one time. The principal told him to throw all the meat out from the refrigerators/freezer. He told her the temperature never dropped far enough to endanger the meat. (They have those temperature monitor devices with circular recording graphs on the units). Principal said throw it all out anyway. As he was emptying the meat lockers, the principal and other administrators came in and carted off all the best meat. Wonder where it all ended up?
