Im not taking any credit,it took a bunch of people,my friend is some great stone mason,he has done it all his life.I am mediocore at it,I know a little bit about a lot ,but not a lot about anything.

You do good work Larry! I went to a community college right out of high school for masonry. Unfortunately we didn't have a chance to do any stone work. I always enjoy seeing masonry work that was done well, I see a lot that isn't.

Excellent job, what type of stone is that? My house is built of blue basalt which is real hard to dress into squares. We also have very hard Mourne granite here...it has no grain and can be dressed into whatever you want.

That sure is nice... a beautiful job. Is this just a decorative wall or going to be a garden wall or ??? In any case, I really like it.

If it isn't top secret, how much would that cost? I know, if you gotta ask..... but enquiring minds would like to know.

Mrs. (WA) and I went to Hawaii for our anniversary. Talked to the maintenance superintendant for the condo complex for about half an hour- I think he was starved for conversation with someone who actually knew something about construction, and could "talk farm". He is not a rich guy, but is a former Minnesota farmer who got tired of the cold, turned the farm over to his son, and moved to warmer climes about 15 years ago.

Turns out he also does some caretaker work for the swells who own multi-million $ estates there. One guy, who is a retired Shell Oil executive who lives way off the highway, behind locked gates, had a rock wall built last year. Don't know if you've seen these walls made of lava rock, but they don't appear to have any mortar- just rocks fit together. I suspect they have mortar way back in, out of sight, but have never inspected one close up.

He said it was very strange, looking at the wall. It looked nice, but really served no purpose, and would never be seen by anyone, because it was beyond a locked gate. He estimated the cost at $200,000. At the instruction of his employer, he oversaw construction of it, and paid over the money when instructed to do so.

And that, boys and girls, is how the other half lives.

So, Larry, I assume there must be a 4 ft or so foundation with a footing under that wall so it won't move with the frost.
There is a wall very similar to that only much longer, on a big ol' estate in Colebrook, CT. It's been there as long as I can remember and I don't see a crack or a "lean" in it anywhere.
It's way outta my league but I do admire good work like that! I don't think good stone work will ever go out of style!

really nice looking, takes someone with artistic eye to lay up like that, every one i have ever tried continues to stand but looks rough as a cob!!

larry,

Way, way, way cool!!! You are an awesome stone mason (if that is the correct lingo). I would love a wall like that.
