O.T. - simple hydraulic question

Need to source low pressure a non collapse return hose from the valve to the filter housing on the 28 ton huskee log splitter. Barbed fittings and clamps, which I would love to change out to a regular hose and fittings that thread in, future consideration.

Its kind of funny as I think I have seen the correct hose for this after searching the net, seems there is heater hose on it now, previous owner or maybe it came that way, not cutting it.

What would be the best hose for a return line, I assume Napa would have this ? Bunch of selections on their site, looks like a Gates product or maybe Aeroquip, thinking of that I believe there is a local dealer. I'd like to source the steel coil protection for the hose too, darned elm log jumped off the log pan and punctured the hose, note to self weld a curb on that ! Not a bad splitter but I have ideas for modifications !

Google coliflower hydraulics, and see if they have a shop near you. Not always the cheapest, but their guys know their stuff. Of you could try looking through what surpluscenter.com stocks.

Since the log splitter return hose isn't under much pressure the clamp on hose should be fine as long as the hose is built for petroleum products. Any good hyd hose repair place should have correct hose.

Heater hose is not a good idea, I think it gets soft, maybe in a pinch to get through for a short time I could not verify what I was looking for, the correct type of hose, one that won't collapse and ok for hydraulic oil, low pressure and barb fittings/clamps.

The darned hydraulic supplier and hose/fitting shop changed hands or name or something, now a regional chain called Omni, I finally tracked em down, same place different name and number, should have what I need, was getting anxious, gee.... a simple thing like a return low pressure hydraulic hose being hard to find on the web LOL.

My tractor with the rube goldberg altered wagner loader has a return line still in heater hose, ends get soft or what have you, think I put that one on years ago after the first one failed, lasted all these years, so I put the same thing back, but kind of suspected heater/coolant hose was not the best choice, think it was from Napa, only thing the had that would fit, should have went to this place, but thought they were out of business.

On the Massey 35 tractor I have a piece of clear rubber-like hose with a 1" ID that I got at the hardware store for temporary use 5 years ago that runs from the valve to the return I and am still using it. It only cost a dollar or two per foot and it is nice that it is clear because I can see whether or not there is oil flowing through it.

I had checked surplus, and as many places as I could find, hose specs for low pressure were a little deceiving, thankfully I just found that hydraulic shop changed hands is all, same place, same product line, just been years since I have been in there, should be good to go, don't want to lose a day because of this darned hose LOL !

There is one of those on the splitter, its corrugated on the suction end of the pump, that one seems to perform well, don't collapse, I have another soft hose on my tractor too, from the pump to the reservoir and I have a bunch of clamps on it, to keep it from collapsing, works fine, but move it a little, and I can't say how many times its caught and moved, you hear the pump whine, as I use to clear a lot of brush and small trees, funny how just the right position it will kink and restrict or if its cold, the fluid is not viscous enough, pump whines, keep it in the heated garage no issue, well at least I know where to get the right darned type of hose, I am really astonished at how long its lasted, funny how that quick repair with the wrong material, sometimes outlasts what you think it would, I should have torn or punctured this low hanging line a dozen times, knock on wood, probably just jinxed it LOL !!!!

this is what I buy here locally for suction hose, tough outside rubber with a wire to keep its shape, this is 1 1/4" cnt

Thats exactly what I need on the old wagner loader, from the reservoir to pump, kind of low to the ground in front, tough hose like that would be ideal.

On the splitter I believe I could, just take off the barbed ends and match the plumbing on the ends, cost more, but a much better job, you can see why these are a lower cost splitter, but with a few d.i.y. upgrades not a bad machine.

I don't know about NAPA,but the Parts Plus here in town has hydraulic return hose. Yes,looks just like heater hose. I had a short hose on one tractor here that kept blowing when I'd drop the loader with one way cylinders too fast. I put a piece of that in there, took care of it.
A guy in the coffee shop was having trouble like you describe on his splitter. I told him about it. He got some, said that fixed it.

Hi Case Nutty, I work on hydrauics on telescopics here in the UK and this is what I use for return hose. 1&1/4 is the same size as I use in most cases. MJ

Went over and got a 3/4" non collapsible hose, with the wire in it, they had a lighter hose, I went with the heavier one, as the lighter one and steel coil protector was $8/foot, vs., $6/foot and heavier casing, don't need any protection on it.

Great ole place, I used to get my aeroquip ratchet straps made up there, as they used to be able to custom build what you want, rebuild your old ones using the original hardware, for the flatbed trailers and trucks I ran at the lumber yard, they don't do that part of it anymore, something with the equipment, thread and bobbins, became too much of a task, probably the best place to get any hydraulic hose in the area. And I thought they were gone, they also sell my favorite penetrating oil, "Free-All" had to get 2 cans of that too !

Well that means back to getting next years wood done !

You need SAE Spec: 100R4, "Hydraulic Suction and
Return line Hose" A quality dealear can apply
crimp fittings, or barbed nipples and hose clamps
are available. Crimped would be preferred for
suction service.

Think thats what I got, 300 psi, wire inside, nice thick casing, and it does not pulse like a firehose whipping around when the detent valve pushes the lever back, same designation was on a new splitter over at TSC, ran most of the day after the quick repair, no more oily, leaking soft heater hose ! LOL !
