Well the boy checked to see if his income tax had come in today. It had so he said dad go pick up my head for the truck engine. So now he is one step closer to use finishing up building his 292 Chev straight 6 and then the real fun putting it in the truck. 1951 Chev he wants for his truck

I rebuilt a Chevy 6 cylinder years ago. Be careful...!!!!

I had one of the front head bolts that was torqued less than the rest of the head bolts. I found out why. It is close to the corner of the block and the block likes to crack...yep you guessed it the block was cracked on the outer edge of the bolt hole. I doped up the hole with pipe sealer and wrapped pipe tape on the head bolt and installed it to the torque spec and never had a problem with it.

Would you believe I have done a very good many of these engine. Have a 250 out in the shop I did a number of years ago has around 3000 miles on it but the rear end of the truck it was in had to old coil spring suspension and the arms rusted out so pulled it out and never got around to putting it back into any thing. It to is no where near stock as in bored etc

Ya this one has been bored and has a high pro cam head milled etc. When all said and done it should jump off the line if he wants to ti and leave corvette in its dust at least for the first gear. He wants to have a 4 speed with a 4X4 transfer case behind it so we can once we find the stuff make it a 4X4 truck

I am about to pull my 51 Chevy into the shop to do a restore on it. I am the second owner and it has 104000 miles on it. I had to put new rods in it in 88 when I rolled it off to crank it at -10 degrees.
I may put a late 235 in it this time.
I have a 4 speed to put in it with the u-joint adapter for the enclosed drive shaft.

He wants to keep this one looking as it does right now so it will look ruff on the out side but purr on the inside. Probably going with a 3/4 ton rear end to start with till we come up with a matched pair of 4X4 axles for it. I have a 4 speed with transfer case from an IH scout that we will use for his 4 speed since it has the transfer case on it and will bolt right up to a Chev bell housing

As for the hubs not 100% sure yet. I have them locked in and have left them that way just in case. Since we have weather coming in I figure I will just leave them as they are and not worry about them till it gets warmer out. Would not be so bad but the boy has his bike in the shop now and him and his friend left the shop a mess so it would take a day to clean it up to drive the truck in and do much inside

That 292 is a good motor had two in new pickups my son had one in a boat in place of a 250 real good on fuel.I have one in a home made tractor.

Well yes but then why do you have the tractors you have and why do you spend the $$ to keep them running. The boy wants a truck that will run strong when he wants it to and not worry about it falling apart under him or if some one runs into him have to walk home. A 1951 is heavy enough that most cars now days if they hit it the boy will look and say hey you ok and be able to drive away but they will need a tow truck. Ya so this engine when done will be around $3000 and that is just the engine

Yep 292 was a good long stroke good pulling engine. Not high RPM but strong plus this one is no where near stock. When the boy was in the navy he had me start building it. He said dad I want ti to leave any thing in the dust off the line. So this on is bored 60 over crank turned 10 under high compression pistons and a 204/208 cam

Dad tells about the milk man when he was a kid. Truck was a Chevy with 292-road was dirt. When muddy, he would put it in granny low and GO!

Old, The last time I drove my 51 on the highway years ago, a young lady ran into the back with one of them new fangled foreign cars at a stop sign. My tailgate was down and it ate up her grill and hood. I had a few scratches. She started crying and said she just had the front fixed from the last wreck she had. Said her husband would kill her this time.
I said since there was no damage to my truck, we would not call the highway patrol and she was very thankful. I went on my way to work.

(quoted from post at 09:39:11 02/26/13) Gee, a 292 beating a Corvette. That's right up there with a 150mph Alfa Romeo.

Especially when the 6 banger has the granny 4 speed behind it. It'll be watch out Corvette. JD dealer I worked for had a '64 C 60 with a rollback to haul equipment. About every 30,000 miles the 292 got new pistons.

Tell me you do not know much about the old 60 nascar rules change due to the fact 6 cylinder where eating V8s all day long. Sorry build to many that would jump off the line. Now after that ya the corvette would pass it bu off the line as in say to 25-30MPH the truck would have it note I did not say he would win a 1/4 mile race just off the line
