O/T horsemeat

So, what's your opinion of the horsemeat 'scandal'?

My opinion is meat is meat. Why do we eat cows but not horses? Because horses are "beautiful, intelligent, companionable" creatures, and cows are not?

I've owned both horses and cattle, and I think cows are also beautiful, intelligent, and companionable, too! Wouldn't trade my 4-H days showing my heifer for anything.

I own a couple of draft horses now, and I probably wouldn't eat my own horses, but I could see picking up some horsemeat from the freezer section (I know - it's the whole "I didn't have to know that particular animal" syndrome!)

So why is one acceptable, but the other not? (by the masses - not the vegetarians/vegans/PETA people!)

By the way, I know dogs and cats are main diet staples in some parts of the world - I wouldn't eat them, but I don't think I have the right to tell others what to eat!

I think its a mindset thing. You are comfortable eating what you were raised with. When i was very young one couldnt afford to eat horses and mules they were the power on the farms.

I don't know whats the big deal about eating horse meat. Horses eat basically the same feed as cattle. I would think the meat from a horse would be a little bit more muscular. I would bet that all of us have eaten horse meat sometime in our life and didn't even know it.

so, what if someone mixed dog and cat meat in with your horse meat and sold it to you as horse meat only. i believe your happiness level would be quite low.

Eat whatever you want. I don't see a problem with the idea of eating horsemeat, provided it is labeled as such, and people do it willingly, not some crooks sliding it in with their other meats hoping nobody will notice.

Some people view horses only as pets, and like a dog or cat, wouldn't eat them. I don't agree, but I get where they're coming from.

If you're selling someone beef, and they're paying for beef, it darn well better be beef. Lately it seems that if you tell people a crap sandwich is gourmet sausage, many will believe it.

I think the biggest concern is intentionally mislabeling meat. I've never eaten horse (that I know of), but I don't suppose it would be much different than most any other meat. As long as the vaccines and things they give horses aren't harmful for humans to eat (I don't know), I don't see much difference. I probably still wouldn't choose to eat it, but to each his own.

In Vietnam...in the villages you did not ask. They would lie to you anyway. But, it was a change fron C-rations.

I would think from a standpoint of working on broodmares farms for 24 years it would be hard to regulate the meat after the use of antibiotics, bute, tribrissern, penicillin, and any other things given to sick or lame horses, I guess somehow youd have to keep records of what was given to the horse, than wait for a certain period before eating it so the drugs are out of the system.

I feel better about eating venison every day! We own the land they live on, we shoot them, and butcher them. No cases of TB or other problems in our area, and, we do not feed them.

20+ years ago, I was talking to a guy who served as a cook in the army during WWII. I can't remember exactly what country he was stationed in, but I think it was Australia. He told me that the soldiers ate horse meat all the time, even though the government said it was beef. I never did hear any outcry about that.

Amen to that Randy! One thing is for sure, the PETA's and animal lovers didn't do horses any favors at all by closing all the US slaughterhouses. Ruined the horse industry, and let hundreds of thousands falter and die in horrible conditions by people who couldn't afford to feed them any more...

Good friend of mine told me a story from the early 80's when times werer pretty tough for alot of people in Central Oregon.
A family he went to church with, who had quite a brood of kids, were really struggling, so he took a big roast over to them one day....
He saw them at church that weekend and the woman thanked him and said how great the meat was, "one of the best roasts they'd ever had". Terry replied "I'll bring you more this week. We're going out horse shooting again tuesday"
The lady was petrified. Funny how perspective can change.
There happened to be a serious overpopulation issue in the wild horse herd on the desert east of town, and the BLM was encouraging the thinning...

Thank heavens for the heroes in our government who rigourously protect us from the danger of accidently eating a little horse meat, just think what might happen if they ignored horse eating the same way they ignore preventing illegal aliens from killing U.S. citizens with guns supplied by the administration, or terrorists killing our diplomats or phony green energy tax scams bankrupting our country.

Probably about like eating goat or lamb. Had some lamb once, wasn't too bad, just the thought of what it had been. Don't really know what I have eaten, ate several boxes of Gains Dog Biscuits in the early sixties. They were pretty tastey. I was going to actually buy a box the last time I was at the store, but got to thinking, don't know what they are putting in them now days.

As expensive a meat is I've never had a problem with horse meat or with leather made from horse hides. So long as the meat is safe to eat and it's labled for what it is, let the consumer decide for themselves. Selling horse or kangaroo meat labled as beef shouldn't be allowed. The same for fish, so much fish is mislabled.

Most vegitarians are well off and can afford to eat well without eating meat, that's their choice. I haven't met many vegitarians that were not well off though.

We had horse meat on are sandwiches for years growing up. My mother bought it at the Holland store. It was good, second only to roast beef but cheaper.

And now they are paying people to take care of them instead. And if you buy any from them, you can't re-sell them for slaughter. And in some states it is illegal to transport them to slaughter on a double-deck trailer. Though transporting them anywhere else is OK I guess.

The men on the Lewis and Clark expedition often ate "horse beef".

I wouldn't mind trying it. And rattlesnake.

Any time I hear of some "gross" stuff going on with meat, be it horsemeat, pink slime, or whatever, my first reaction-especially if it's been going on for a while and has just been discovered by a whistleblower-is that some animal rights group is behind it trying to scare folks away from enjoying a nice, tasty burger.

Always amazes me that people get bent about eating horse or lamb or "bunny". Then they tie into some baloney or hot dogs that's made from the bung holes and eye balls and stuff or they go to the Chinese place an eat stuff that was probably rancid 3 days before they cooked it. You don't see much food thrown away at a Chinese joint. The bums won't go through the dumpster there!

Now that they have legislated that horses can't die, it makes it absolutely appalling that they would be eaten doesn't it?
