Speedi sleeve install questions

Needing to install a speedi sleeve into a close clearance area. Not much room between the bearing and the oil seal. What is your guys best technique for removing the flange without distorting the sleeve? There is a weep hole for lubing some internal needle bearings that would be covered by the flange. Also, has anyone installed a speedi sleeve backwards? Thinking if there is too close of clearance that removal of the flange would cause the edge of the sleeve to be on the seal, would I be able to install it backwards, flange on last? I would think this would be a big No-No but asking never hurt. Thanks a bunch!
 
With the backwards install, do you think I could warm/heat the sleeve enough it could just drop on?
 
I'm not sure we understand your question.
I've never installed a speedi-sleeve with the seal still in the cavity. Warming up the sleeve would help but then as soon as it touches the shaft it was going on would cause it to cool quickly and shrink to it's interference fit size. So no heating it wouldn't help in my opinion. Besides if you would install a hot sleeve with the seal already in there what would happen to the seal. What's this machine you are working on.
 
If there is a need for the sleeve, there is likely a need for a new oil seal. And if, as you make it sound, there is an oil passage that will be shut off by the sleeve, you would need to drill a hole in the sleeve and fit it very carefully over the hole. Just my thoughts.
 
The seal is not installed. This is going onto a TA unit in a Farmall 300 utility. The clearance issue is when the unit is re-installed into the tractor. I am worried that the sleeve won't be able to cover where the seal will ride due to the space taken up by the installing flange on the speedi sleeve. The flange would have to be removed to allow oil to flow through the weep hole, therefore the question on the best method for removing the flange without distorting the sleeve. Obviously more measuring needs to be done when the sleeve arrives to determine if the sleeve position will be a problem or not. Just trying to get all my ducks in a row in advance.
 
you will most likely need a different seal to fit over the speedi sleeve as the original seal will be too tight and burn out. Chuck
 
That clarifies things somewhat. Now I understand what you are up against. As you say, when you get the sleeve, you will be able to better figure it out. Don't blame you for trying to get things lined up ahead of time. Sounds like very close quarters. And good luck.
 
I think I'm getting what your talking about here. That said the flange on a Speedi-Sleeve is what's used to drive it on so it has to be there to get it in place. Once in place a really skinny, sharp cold chisel usually works to split it to a point you can use a pair of needle nose pliers to peal it away from the main body of the sleeve like opening a sardine can. As far as heat, using heat on a Speedi-Sleeve is a big NO-NO.

Given your situation I meant to include this, but got distracted. Once you get the sleeve on using the back, drive flange, get it close, and remove the drive flange, you still might be able to move it. To do so, use another piece of tubing machined to a good, snug, yet slip fit on the shaft to butt the outer edge of the main body of the sleeve. With the tube, you can usually tap it on just a bit further. I've done it before and you stand the chance of messing the sleeve up this way, but if you take it easy when tapping it on, it should work. Good luck.
 
I'm not quite sure what you're asking - but I'll add that the flange on the speedi sleeve is removeable.

It was designed to peel off cleanly.

It's only purpose is to aid in installation.
 
Speedi sleeve's are designed so that you use the
original oil seal. their few thousands of thick-
ness are well within oil seal tolerances. Just
make sure the seal lip is lubed before startup!
