School Consolidation

That is a pretty specific incident. Schools are going to have to consolidate to provide the levels of classes to keep students competitive in the world.

I do not believe that is a consolidation issue. That is a by product of no child left behind that turned into pulling all children behind. That program needs to be scrapped.

It would be just as legitimate to blame global warming or anything else as the cause for this race/food fight.

I am of the firm belief a small class makes for a better educated student since the teacher can catch if one student falls back quicker then in a larger class.
I agree about the no child left behind fiasco. That is going to be this countrys downfall.

I would totally agree with you that small class size is important. The benefit of consolidation is that more classes can be offered.

I live outside two smaller communities that are refusing to consolidate. The schools are only a mile apart. Both schools are sliding in academic ranking. I have to send my kids to the city school 15 miles away to get good college prep.

Consolidation is enviable. All my life 67 yrs, we have had to contend with it. I started school in a 1 room school, Olive Branch, 16 or so of us. All 8 grades. Never really learned to read till the 3 rd grade. Then it closed and went to town school,(everybody was against it) it had 3 teachers each teaching 3 grades, except the superintendent just had 2 and he just taught 1 grade each year, so you might take the 8th before the 7th. went there 3 years. Then our farm changed districts, and I went to a bigger school that had 8 classes and teachers. Then went to 2 high Schools ended up at a giant one of 500 kids. Never moved. Where I went to school never made any difference. The teacher made the difference. I have since been on the board when we consolidated. I am sure some of my neighbors haven't forgot. If our one room school were still there there would be 2 kids in its district.

It is hard to take sides in this mayhem--It is like watching a fight between a python and a crocodile in the Florida swamp-neither of them is a native to this country and you hope they both drown!!!

Only usa......you would be surpised to find out that you are not a native of this land also. Think about it...if you can!

Once again yes and no. Due to the age we live in with live video streaming they offer "distance learning". Basically you can have a teacher anywhere in the world and students anywhere also. They have been using this for years in this area, and also helps keep costs down because if an adult is required in the classroom it does not have to be a certified teacher. The downside is they can get away with paying people less because they are not teachers. I think this is a very good idea especially in smaller schools who can take advantage of technology.

That's nothing. How many of You lived through Desegregation in the south? It started my first day of High school.

They do the vid stuff here and the 4 schools within a 20 mile circle still have most if not ALL students that have to do a couple of years in a community college to get caught up enough to finish in a regular 4 year college. Pretty sad when a kid who is the valedictorian and took all the hard classes can't even pass the entrance exam to get in the Air Force Academy.

My wife just a couple of years ago took a 2 year AG program at the closest community college. The school hired here for about 15 hours a week to tutor kids both in math and english. Most of the kids she helped were local kids we know who did well in the local schools but couldn't deal with college level math and wrote at a 8th grade level. 2 of them were a niece (B average in highschool) and a nephew who was a slacker in school.

IMO "no child left behind" is criminal.
