Winner of a boss

Have you ever had a boss that you just can't work for? If so how did you handle it? This guy is a real horses hind end, but he has the higher ups really snow-balled into thinking that he is the greatest thing ever

You handle that with perserverance.

Continue to be the best at what you do, and don't let him reduce you into anything less.

Don't brag, don't complain or try to trash him. Just mind your own business, and do whatever it is you do better and faster than anybody else. It takes some time, and it can be annoying, but eventually everyone's true colors show through.

Meanwhile, in the background you better youself every chance you can. Classes, certifications, whatever you can do.

That extra effort always pays off in the long run.

The way to deal with this *ick*ead is to allow him to fall flat on this face multiple times and let his boss see it. Then the managers will see how much of a pile of crap he really is.

Gentlemen, I appreciate the advice. I will keep persevering. It's tough though, been going on two years with this bozo!

If it gets too bad, move on. Most people I know who have done that ended up with a better job. Just don"t quit before you have another job.

Wife's brother was in much the same situation. I pointed out he really couldn't afford to quit. Bunch of other guys did. Upper management finally did figure out the high turnover was due to this clown and he got canned.

I had one like that once. I told him one day before lunch that I thought he ought to hire another man. He said he thought so too. He went in the house and wrote my check. To this day I don't know if I quit or got fired. But I did see the old rascal in the nursing home this winter. He was just as crabby as ever only worse. He did not remember me. I really felt bad for him.

When I was young and stupider than I am now I had a boss who would sneak up behind me and pinch my elbow. You know that sick feeling you get when you hit your funny bone? That's what it felt like and it made me jump and he thought it was funny. After the second time he did it I turned around and said, Ralph, the next time you do that I'm gonna deck ya. There was no next time.

Do what I did, I found another job and quit.

The guy I worked for was dumb as a box of rocks, the problem is his daddy owned the company and gave it to him lock stock and barrel with no debt. The guy was constantly wasting dollars while saving pennies. The other problem was he thought everyone was as dumb as he was. He'd buy a new Suburban every year that was the same color. One day I asked him if he really like that color and he looked at me like I'd just kicked him. He asked me how'd I know he had a new Suburban - turned out he thought that no one would notice he was buying new ones because they were the same color...... He didn't want his employees to know he was buying new cars every year. Didn't help him when he pleaded poverty to everyone when it came to raises.

Do what I did. Quit.
I had a boss that nobody could work for and the turnover was really high. I worked there exactly six months and two weeks. For six months he was a terrible boss and I gave him my two-week notice. For the next two weeks, he was the nicest boss you ever could imagine. On my last day, with about one more hour to go, he pulled me over and tried to get me to stay. I told him that there was no way I'd work for him any more. When he asked why, I politely told him that he was the worst boss that I ever had. He then said that it was how he had to be to run a successful business. I then told him that he obviously didn't have a successful business the last two weeks. He didn't say any more to me after that.

I had one like that. After 3 years of trying JR Suttons advice I decided to cut my losses and quit after I finished the project I was working on. 2 years later when the job was done I did quit and told them why. In the meantime 4 other people had quit, all of them with a different amount of dislike for this guy. When they heard I was not happy too they asked and I told them. To their credit things did get dialed back but the bridge was burned(turns out if you treat people like crap for 4 or 5 years they tend to hold it against you even after you stop). Just to be fair the guy was competent, but so were the people under him that he couldn't quit being an a hole to. My regret is I didn't quit sooner, I still wake up some days growling about him until I realize what I'm doing and know I no longer work for him.
The strange part is that the big boss, who I tried to tell before things got too bad, was pretty good to work for until shortly after this guy got in the office. By the time I was ready to quit I couldn't have walked in and convinced them it was raining out if I was dripping wet. After working there for 8 years this was the sudden attitude change, but he never said anything bad about any one is the info that he volunteered. Kind of made me wonder since he brought it up and not me.
Do yourself a favor and decide to quit, if you feel better after that decision then it is the right one and go find another job. If you don't feel better then it is not the right decision. Try to switch departments if you can, but time will show him for what he really is, you don't have to.

Ride it out and continue to do you job the best you can or look for another job. Most guys like that are focused on getting their next promotion as fast as possible. They want to leave just as much as you want them to leave.

Management hired the guy, and still expects good things from him. If you complain you will be perceived as the problem, not him.

In some places the cream rises to the top, in other places it's the scum that rises to the top. If where you work is the latter, give up, go find another job and then quit. Your sanity is worth more than their money. I have told bosses "I was looking for work when I came here and I'll be looking for work when I leave". If it is a good place with only one bad egg it is likely worth riding out and waiting for the hire-ups to see that he's no good. When it comes right down to it, they don't own you, they only rent you, and if the rent isn't good enough to put up with the BS, don't.

Had one like that about twelve years ago. Real, dyed in the wool ahole. Thought he was gonna get on my case one morning. I put up with it for a while, then got up and gave him my two weeks notice, took two weeks vacation, and walked out. And, I have never looked back. It was the best decision I ever made.

It it's really unbearable, find another job then quit.

I worked for a place that made and delivered hamburger for one of the big burger chains when I was about 24 yrs. old. We ground and packed the beef three days a week and delivered two then the next week it was grind and pack two days and deliver three. The plant was in Columbus and I had the Cincinnati route on one of the three delivery day weeks. The Cinci run was a twelve hour day on a good day, longer if it was bad weather and lots of traffic in town. It was one of those bad days and I'd been out about 14 hours in bad weather and was bone tired from driving and lifting and hauling crates of meat. For some reason when we loaded the truck we miscounted and over loaded it and had extra crates of meat. Usual procedure when the plant was closed was to back up to the dock and plug in the reefer unit and go home, then unload it the next day. I got back to the plant and backed up to the dock and who should appear but the nasty a$$hole manager... drunk, staggering around and slurring his words. He wanted the truck unloaded right then. Needless to say I was none too happy, being tired and hungry and having a pretty young wife waiting at home for attention. I vowed that would the last time he'd do that or any of his usual crud to me and went back to construction work as soon as I could.

I put up with the same thing for over 7 years. Finally got enough and found a better job, just had to move 70 miles away but it was worth it. I had 2 wks vaca coming when I gave my notice, and the jacka$$ told me I wouldn't get it, so I never came back, left him in the lurch. And it felt so good. And I got my vacation pay after all.

Great Advice and wisdom!!

Could we add get to know the upper management at every opportunity, in a solid, professional manner -- NOT suck-up! Let them get to know him, what he's doing for the company.

We all do business best with people we know & trust - -sometimes we don't even like the S.O.B. but we trust him. I believe management wants to feelthe same with & from employees.

I currently have that issue now but at my job the managers average tenure is 1.4 yrs so I'm not worried he'll be fired and I'll still be there but just deal with it until it's over. This guy will lie directly to your face and deny it when called on it which makes my life harder because I'm a shop steward so gotta stick up for my fellow drivers/mechanic

Had a guy like that- he got fired a little over a year ago. He got his 5th DUI after a company sponsered softball game. They stuck it out with him for quite a while after that, but then one day they finally woke up. He would drive the company trucks without a valid DL, lie to our faces then go kiss the owners back side. He'd talk down to us all the time and mis-manage the shop.

At one point, our efficiencies were around 80%, and on-time deliveries were below 50%. The average over the several years he was in that position were in the low 80's or lower....

Since the month he was fired, our numbers shot up, and the last 4 months we've been averaging better than 105% efficient, and about 99% on time deliveries for the last year.

I got a considerable raise a month ago, along with most other guys in the shop...
