I know some of you like bluegrass music. I also know there's different styles. I prefer the old time style. I recently traveled to see Whitetop Mountain Band. They are considered at the top of the heap in this area. Best I've ever seen and that's just my opinion. Thornton Spencer is a legend fiddle player. He was taught by Albert Hash and Hash was a fiddle maker. The video link is from Song Of the Mountain (PBS) Title:Lee Highway Blues

Hope some of you enjoy this on a February winter day. Like old tractors being restored these folks carry on history in these modern times.

Gotta be hard to flat-foot in those pointy-toes.LOL!
Great band, though. Old time is the best.
My ancestors are from Grayson co., but we came "down from the mountains" many years ago to the Shenandoah Valley.

Wish I was closer to the area, I'd get to see a lot more than I do. You're in the middle of it. The Crooked Road I'd like to spend several weeks along that taking my time to see all I could in that time frame.

The young lady flat footing is Martha Spencer. She's won many contest. She's young. LOL Her Mom is on the banjo and Dad on the fiddle.

I'm in the foothills of the blue ridge in Halifax County. Grew up with this kind of music and still love it today. I'm near Madison Heights and the James River Bluegrass association and go there as often as I can. Good clean entertainment.

You need to check out The Lincoln Theatre in Marion, Va. www.thelincoln.org Whitetop Mountian will be there April 16 this year. If you ever get to Galax fidlers convention holler at me as I am only 11 miles from there.

I started checking in to the The Lincoln Theatre. Every time I see it on TV it looks packed. I'd sure hate to drive that far and not get in. I'll have to check out advanced tickets I guess.
I've always wanted to go to Galax for that event. Might make it this year. Still working a full time job and have to plan for that. I did sell all my cattle so that did free up some time.

Thank you for the information and if I get out that way I'll sure holler at you.

this is almost tractor related because the first time i heard of them was in an article on emily spencer that was in an old issue of the free massey ferguson magazine. i've been following them ever since. -john-

I was wondering if she could make it the whole 3+ minutes, glad she had a break in the middle, that's some stomping!

I really admire Mrs. Spencer. She's taught that music in schools for over 25 years. I thinks it's wonderful to pass those old songs and style of music down to others. She plays claw hammer style and again is the best I've seen.
It's hard to beat a family band as they just play and sing so well together.

The daughter Martha reminds me of June Carter Cash in her younger days. This young lady can really sing as well as play most any instrument she picks up.

Each time I've seen them play they always invite everyone to get up and dance and the floor fills up. After the show some of the members come out and talk to the audience and sell some CD's. Very nice folks as was everyone I talked to there.

Great, thanks

If you want to hear good oldtime and bluegrass music you need to attend the Grayson Co. Oldtime and Bluegrass Fiddlers Conv. in Elk Creek Va. It will be june 28 & 29 2013. It is one of the best around with plenty of camping room and it is in beautiful farm country with plenty of tractors to see. This will keep it farm related.

That is some real fine music and clog dancing. I like to listen to the old tunes.

My wife's family is from Mingo County WV. Quite a few of her relatives play Blue grass music.

In my area Don Reno and Red Smiley were on in the morning with Irving Sharp on WDBJ 7 out of Roanoke Va. And remember some of the shows in the evening too. I grew up listening to them every day. Ronnie Reno was just a kid them. On his show now he sometimes pulls those old films out and runs them. Sure brings back memories.

They have a place called Carter Fold in Hiltons Virginia which is west of Abingdon, Va that has regular shows. Probably around 100 miles west of Galax.
