Some Nice Pictures

Thought I would share a few of these this evening.
The wagon load peaches reminds me of when I lived at home and we would bring in loads like that and grade thru them to sell. As time went along no one bought bushels like those pictured. They just didn't can or preserve fruit any more.

Those are great John B! Like yourself, I remember when the peach orchards in the sandhills of NC were booming. When I married in '66 my FIL would drive to the peach orchards about twice every summer and buy three or four bushels to can. There were huge packing houses that packed peaches for shipping. Nowadays when you drive through the area, all those places are just abandoned buildings. There are still a good number of orchards, but not like there once was. Like they say, times have changed.

Great photos!

Do you know the decade of these pics? The girl playing the horn, looks like my mom when she was a teen... that funky "pin-curled" hairdo.

Sweetfeet I would guess in the late 1940s or early 1950s. I was born in 1950 and there is a picture of one of my Aunts holding me as an infant. She would have been 12 at that time and her hair style was like the one in the pictures above.

The one girl is wearing white low cut tennis shoes. They where not popular until the about that same time frame.

Also there does not appear to be an TV in the living room. Many would have had them by the mid to late 1950s.

I often think that TV was the start of a lot of family issues. There are many reasons but two big one are the fact that the family did not entertain each other like they did before then. Also it showed a story book style of living where everyone on the TV had all the latest things/possessions. That was not how most peoples lives where at that time. So it helped make people unhappy with their "normal" lot in life.

Cool pictures! I had a canner like the one on #2. I tried to make a smoker out of it and it got too warm and started to melt the sodder in the seams.

JD Seller,

Thanks. I'm betting you are right on the time frame.

I agree with you on the TV thought...everyone is supposed to be quiet because someone on the squawk box is talking - rather than interacting and conversing as a family or playing a board game and talking.

It also pertains to all sorts of electronic gadgets like video games, cell phones and computers. I'm "guilty" on the computer charge sometimes - but while I am online, my entire family is staring at the TV. Texting is the worst, because people do it continually and ignore those people that they are actually with, in a room.

Sweetfeet and JDSeller, you are right about the TV and those who watch it see what others have. It's a lot like the family shows on TV now days. Family life isn't much like they play it up to be on TV programs.

I will start putting the dates along with the pictures I post. These were dated but I never took the time to type it in. Glad you all enjoy them.
