OT appliance advice

Well my top loading washer took a dump, again! Last time was in july of last yr, and about yearly , in the last 5 years. So much for the bored Maytag repairman! In 1969, I bought the wife our first set of automatic machines, from Maytag, I moved them with us to washington in 79, when I came out to work for boeing. We still had them when I bought this farm in 2000. The wife gave them to her sister, being as there was a new set of Fridgidare washer& dryer in this house, and avacado was very out of style. We haven't been able to get much over 5 yrs out of any machine, since. In 2008 I bought a new maytag again, and have kept the repairman busy, at least once a year. I want to buy a new machine to replace this junk, and need recomendations, as to what to buy next, that might last 8 to 10 yrs! Any appliance repair men here on this forum, that is familiar with what holds up best?

RalphWD45,
I was just wondering how many are in your family that you have to do laundry for or maybe I should ask how often do you use the washer?
What keeps going wrong with them?
We have a whirlpool and 4 months ago the timer went out. First time in 6 years anything ever went wrong. I ordered a new timer online installed it myself and it's been working fine.
Seems unusual all the trouble you've been having.

Maytag isn't Maytag any more but a cheap copy now days. I have a friend who is into the job of selling stuff like that and if you e-mail me I will call and ask him what is the best for the bang right now. Sorry but it seems to change every year now days and what was good today is not tomorrow and sad but most is made to break down fast not like the stuff of days gone by when you built this or that with pride

There was a post awhile back that said buy LG brand. The poster said he was a tech for Sears, and they are all junk except the ones made by LG.

All mine were used before I got them. The Maytag lasted the longest. I made repairs on every one of them.
The door switch is the first to go on any of them. Then it's anything from belts to timer switch.
I now have a Roper. It's probably twelve years old. The ratching mechanism in the agitator fell apart and I replaced it from a old Whirlpool. It's still washing.

I used to say "Buy a Maytag for the cheap price, not because of the reputation", but I no longer tell anybody to buy a Maytag.
We bought a new Maytag washer from our local appliance store to "buy local". It lasted a couple of years and began to leak. My brother, who used to work at this appliance store said it would be too expensive to fix and the repair might not last. So we bought an identical washer on my Grandma's estate sale that was less than a year old and had probably less than 25 uses on it. A couple of months later the fill solenoid went out and flooded the laundry room. We bought a Maytag side-by-side 'fridge that is one of the biggest POS fridges that I've seen. It can't keep up in the summer and it freezes in the winter. Plus the ice maker usually doesn't work without you banging on the ice cube holder first. "It works fine" is the comment that the appliance store tells us. My mom bought a Maytag deep freeze that went out under warranty. They put on a fitting so that they could add freon and when it went out again they told her that the warranty had expired, "So sorry!". (They didn't file the paperwork when they put on the fitting, so now that the warranty is expired, my mom is SOL)
I bought a GE washing machine in December and there is no comparison between the two. I will not own another new Maytag appliance ever again.

I have a matching set of whirlpools and they are about 25 years old or so. Only things I had to do were a new agitator, and a house call to fix the transmiison for the bucket.
Pretty dependable if you ask me.

Don't know who made them but we have a 22 year old Magic Chef that we have not spent a nickel on. Washes farm coveralls, rugs, you name it. Gets used a lot every week. Knock wood!!

We have Kenmore appliances that are 15 years old and everyone has had to be repaired a time or two each.We just replaced our microwave from Sears and salesman told average life of microwave is 5 years.

Not sure I can offer up much for advise but here is my experience.

Bought a Maytag CENTENIAL pair a couple years ago and only time I had the repair people out for W&D was to put in the dryer vent in our new house.

When I bought I told the owner I wanted a machine I could set to completely fill with water so I could properly wash chemical application clothes. Thusly I wanted a full on top loader with a agitator. The ones without are just a front loader stood upright.

This was from a shop in a town of about 3000 and the owner who I dealt with is one of the same people who do installations and repairs. He told me the pair he sold me basically have the same components that are used in Laundromat machines. Few years before I tried buying a wall mount AC unit and the owner said he didn't handle Window and Wall AC's cause they were all pretty much complete junk and he didn't want to deal with the headaches involved.

That all being said we have had good luck but so far I have run all the loads that have gone through the pair. My limit on load size is three pairs of jeans and three work shirts in one load.

Ralphwd45, I Never buy New!!!! Been married 22 yrs About every 4 to 5 yrs something goes out. Scrap the pair, look in Craigslist, Thrifty Nickle and buy a well cared for top load washer, and front load dryer pair, with basic controls. In the $400 range. I figure I am dollars ahead in this game Haven't had a pair not make at least 4 yrs! Figure it takes us about 26 weeks to pay for it and after that it is just gravy, Haven't been sorry yet! Go price Brand New! See what I mean. I usually buy from some local guy who gives a 30 day warranty 4 weeks that is time enough to figure out if it is solid or not!
From time to time most folks use a local
washiteria figure what you spend there, and divide that into the cost of a New or Used pair and see which ones pencils out quicker!
Maytag sold out to some other company so they are No longer maid by Maytag corp. Go buy a whirlpool or something else. Hope this helps.
Later,
John A.

We raised the wife's grandson, and about 8 yr's ago, I had a son live with us for a couple of yr's also. After my young son left and got on his own, his sister, took his place, and I finished putting her thru school, including vocational school. Both kids responded well to having a dad again, and both finished school, and went to Clover Park, and got a trade. They both have their own homes now. The grandson also went to Clover Park, learned auto body& painting, and moved out, got married, and was laid off in Dec. He , his wife, and two babies, have been with us since around christmas. I never realized how much the demand was on the washer, till I started writing this post. I guess it has had it's work cut out for it!

Go visit the Samuri Repairman at fixit now.com. Search the forums for your make/model/problem. He"s helped me fix my washers and dryers several times and is downright hilarious. Check out his appliance haiku poems.

You should just go ahead and get an old wringer washer for loads like that. You can put as much water as you need to clean chemicals and it easy to make sure it's rinsed out with no residue.

I bought my grandmother's old gas powered washer 20 years ago because I thought I'd pull the engine off of it and use it on a go cart or something. Never did do that but the last couple of years my wife started using it to clean the really nasty clothes she doesn't want run through the same washer she uses for the baby's clothes. That thing has to be 70 years old but it still runs like a tank. One of the kid's teacher's at school thought he had to lying when he said his mom had a kick start washing machine.

Current machine is a Sears. It had some early problems but was de-bugged under warranty.
The best part of it is we purchased the highest capacity front loader with the least amount of control features/functions.
Will not ever consider a top load washer ever again.

99% of them are all the very same machine with a different label. a true maytag has not been built in several years.i would take a thirty year old maytag over any new rebranded one anytime.

I kinda agree with John A. I buy from the scratch and dent isle at home depot or lowes. So, it will be heavily discounted and comes with a full warranty. I mean, who really cares if there is a dent in a washing machine. It'll probably be stuck in a basement or way out of the way regardless.

well, Maytag and amana, kitchen aide and a couple others are all owned by whirlpool. We had whirlpool made kenmores that lasted 16 years with no issues but Dryer finally quit.. too many burnt wires to trust it again so we found end of model year pair of high efficiency maytag (bravos??) top loader & dryer combo for same/less $ than the 16 year olds. 2 years with no issues but did get the extended warranty.

Used to work for a company that made parts for GE and Frigidaire. won't even look at either of them. made in mexico now anyway.

Hate to say it but we just bought a new frig and went samsung... HATE to not by American or even North American (Mexico) but they all had a junky feel to them in the store... (of course they all have chinesse parts inside too)

Good luck.

Think right now, any applinace purchase is a crapshoot. Wife got a small inheriance, and decided (rightfully so) that she wanted new appliances in the kitchen. We ended up buying on the features we thought most attractive and useful to us in our kitchen. Bosch, Samsung and Frigidare now grace our kitchen. Would have liked a matched (by brand) set, but no luck. Really, these three look pretty good together. And yeah, we knew ahead of time they might be made other than USA. Just finished installing last item yesterday. We'll see if they hold up as well as the old ones!

Bought a dishwasher last month. The salesman told me most appliances are made in China. He claimed LG was being made in Korea and Bosch is American made.I got almost 10 years out of a Frigidaire front load washer and drier which must be nearly a record with the way new stuff is made. For the record I bought an end of year LG display model.I would have gone Bosch but I liked the features and design of the LG a lot better. The washer is also a scratched LG but the Frigidaire drier is still going strong.

I didn't buy a front loader because that's what mom had when I was a kid. I used to sit in front of it and watch tv (we didn't have the regular kind). Grant you the current day $1k fancy doo dads have a much larger capacity and surely they fixed the problems that plagued those of yester-year. I have always used top loaders.

Since 1965ish I have used Sears or Whirlpool, both the same to me and had outstanding luck. The last Whirlpool I bought about 8 years ago was pretty much completely redesigned underneath where it matters and have had zero problems with it. Still going strong. Even with 4 kids we'd get 15 or years out of them. As I recall I brought a used one here and since have had 2 new ones.

I bought it from a mom and pop shop and had their courteous service man install it and both the price and installation were very reasonable. Probably a dozen big box shops around here and they too have good products and courteous delivery. Bought my Maytag frige from Lowe's at about the same time. No problems with it too.

If you want a plain Jane dishwasher that is extremely quiet and reliable check out the Frigidaire. I bought one for my DIL for $200 and liked it so much I bought one for myself to replace my GE's that I used to buy. That was at least 10 years ago and it's still going strong. That too came from Lowe's.

HTH,
Mark
