Ford 350 v10

Looking at a 2010 350 Ford pickup with a V10 motor. Need it for pulling a goose neck trailer with two smaller tractors on. Question, think I'd be happy with the V10 or go back to a diesel. I know gas mileage will be under 10, probably. Any issues with that motor that would be helpful in knowing? Thanks

it's one's prefences, do you save/spend money on fuel/gas for mileage, and/or power, both can pull the same to a point, just depends on how much you want to spend..one's that has both might say, should i have kept the other one. it's a 50/50 world of engines. mileage, some say they are getting better than others, all in the driving,,, they use v-10's for motor homes, pulls them o-k...as for that motor, and others, just depends on how one's driving habbits are..

I would say if you are only using it occasionally to pull the trailer the V10 would be a good choice, as long as your saving a lot on the purchase price.

I have heard people like the V10 but just not the gas mileage. I have an old 460 and haven't found anything yet I can't pull ! I get 8 MPG.
But alot of the reports on diesel mileages range all over the place and some hard to believe too.
Unless pulling full time I doubt the diesel would be of much benefit.
You should be able to buy a gas one ALOT cheaper too.

Lots of variables and miles per gallon is only one of them. How many miles per year? How much towing versus empty, going to run the truck into the ground or trade in a couple years? all factor in.
I can tell you from my fleet management experience that it takes LOTS of miles and many years of ownership to have diesel pay out. I can also tell you that the highest mileage figures you read are BS, as are the lowest. Use the middle ground to figure costs. The V10s of that vintage are pretty bullet proof. Personally I changed back to gas after 25 years of diesels.

The V10 always had the higher HP rating of the gas/deisel option until the 6.4 diesel came out. Just like the 460 was the more powerful of the 460/6.9/7.3 IDI option.

I have one and I am happy. It is my workhorse. It is towing something 75% of time. Stock, equipment, and camper trailers. Towing a 8000# trailer in flatland 9-10 mpg. In hills its less. Empty I have gotten as high as 15 on highway in the flats. Mine has a 3.73 rear. It has 80k miles and so far is flawless.

I run an '01 with the V10, 5-speed, and 3.73's. Very happy with it. Nearing 200,000 miles, up to 16 mpg highway.

I have a F250 2005 with the 6.8 V10 and six speed manual. I use it mainly for pulling my gooseneck in the summer months. I'd drive it all the time if gasoline went back to $1.50 per gal.

We have a 2011 F-450 auto,V-10. it will pass anything but a gas tanker. It replaced a F-350 V-8, worthless POC, the flat bed hit the tires the first time we set a welder in it, tranny lasted 30,000miles. I like the v-10.

I have a V 10 in my Excursion and can pass most anything I want to going up hill pulling my 23" camper. Always amazes me how much pedal is left when you tromp on it to pass someone on the two lane. Lots of power. Nearly 245,000 miles on it and never been in the shop other than maintenence. A bit tough on gas but what isn"t when pulling a trailer that catches all the wind.

It'll pass anything except a gas station :)

Something wrong with that, we don't have overloads in our 350 but you can set a full pallet of blocks or 4000 lbs of hay without getting onto bump stops.

I had a v10 in a 99 250 and it was o.k. but then jumped into a 7.3 in a 03 250 and I'll never have a v10 again. The 6.4 are good but steer clear of a 6.0 as I hear they have a lot of troubles. My diesels get better mpg and have better power but on my 6.4 twin turbo I put a programmer on it to get it to jump to life. It was sluggish compared to the 7.3 and now kicks out 425 h.p.
