OT: My first earthquake

Sunday morning around 1:30, I had just gotten off work and was at my computer when the house started shaking hard for a few seconds. I've lived in earthquake zones before (Turkey, Mexico, Central and South America), but this was my first and I hope my last. Only a 5.0 magnitude off the coast of the island (Trinidad) and Venezuela, but I could only think of a bigger one coming and tearing things up.
How do you guys that get tremors often get used to it?

Oh, for you folks that are snowed in, it's in the upper 70's to mid 80's here and Carnival is in full swing until Tuesday.
 
My wife, our daughter, and I slept through an earthquake in California, once.

We were visiting an uncle of my wife's in Visalia, went back to our motel and went to bed about 11:00. The quake was about 4.5, and hit shortly after midnight. We didn't know anything about it 'til we went down for breakfast and everyone was talking about the earthquake. There were even a few windows broken in the motel.

I guess being from the Midwest, we're tuned into tornados, not earthquakes.
 
We are over due for an 8+ quake from Alaska to Chile along the entire western coast.
There are going to many surprised folk in coastal cities when the buildings. Located on reclaimed land where marshes and shallow water used to be.
 
I was in the 7.1 SF quake in 1989 it wasn't just a little shaking believe my. I was sitting down in a light chair under a lt of giant redwoods that shook like a fishing pole they said my motor home was bouncing clear off the ground. There a large crack in the road in front of it and a river behind. The whole place shook for two weeks afterwards you don't get used to it.

PS one of my best friends that I have now was just over the hill about 10 miles he said earlier in the day I wish a big quake would come along and destroy this darn building, he working on the phone system in it.
 
Around 68, the New Madrid through a fit and really messed up the game of 8 ball I was playing!
