Snake in the Woodpile

I find snakeskins in my woodpile all the time and I "guess" I'm glad they are there as I hate the smell of mice Pi$$ on my wood!
I'm into a section of the pile that hasn't been touched in over two years and I found a pretty big skin the other day.
BTW, this wood was hauled out of the woods with my WD Allis! Let's keep it tractor related.
Oh!......and the wifey wasn't too keen about me bringin' "that dam-ed thing in the house!! LOL

Glen, That is a very good question....I've got to do a little research and see how these snakes manage to survive the cold winters we have here in uppa NY state.

I have been using wood from a pile that is 2 years old, covered with a tarp. I have found many snake skins, glad I'm not hauling it in the summer. There was a dead woodchuck underneath too, I had thought I missed him, but I guess not!

I brought some cotton wood in last winter that was frozen down in dirt. There was a knot with a hole in it going into a hollow spot. The next day my wife came up stairs yelling. A little Baby bull snake had crawled out of the wood and was in front of the washing machine. That was in January it warmed up in the basement by the wood burner and crawlled out of the knot hole.

I found a huge snake skin stretched across one of thewife's flower beds - skin measured over 6 ft long. I showed it to my wife and she accused me of just gluing a couple of "normal snake skins together.

A couple of days later, the REST of the snake showed up in the same flower bed. It was just a kindly old ratsnake, so I "shushed" it off into the woods behind my tractor shed. (Now I know why I have never had much of a mouse problem around my tractors!)

I never did tell the wife about that part - I would never have gotten her to work in the yard again.

My wife hates snakes. ANY snake. She found one on the porch last summer and blew it and part of the porch away with a 12 gauge. This past fall she was really paranoid for a couple of weeks cuz she ran into another snake in the yard and she shot at it and missed and it got under the house.OH, she shot at it 14 times. Two cylinders full out of my Taurus 357 loaded with 38 Spec.

When I was in high school, I killed a big timber rattler, and one of my friends wanted to tan the hide. I was game, and figgered we'd skin it outside somewhere, but he insisted on skinning it on his mom's kitchen table. She didn't seem to mind, but 25 years later his dad was out here visiting us, and he said it was tough for him to get breakfast down the next morning, after seeing that thing disassembled at his place at the table. I still remember him walking in the kitchen with his bath robe on and giving us a long hard look. . . My buddy's mom was a sweet lady!
