The Fall Harvest. My best time of the year...

We never had corn, but I remember when a friend of my Dad's got one just like this. That was a big deal, and Farmer from miles round can and looked at it.

That there is my childhood with all Farmall and I.H. equipment. Remember many a September afternoon putting the 2M or 2ME or 2MH on the M, Super M or 400. Putting that pto gearbox and axle cleaners were part of the dirty job. Of course first had to widen the front tricycle wheels to widest position and make sure the mud scrapers were set right cause we are going to find some mud. Then get the old flair boxes ready and the chain hoist and cables lubed and the infamous worthless Kelly Ryan elevator set up at the picket cribs. Hauled corn from the picker Dad was running when I turned 10 and my birthday was October 18 so he always let me skip school if it was during the week. I remember putting round picket cribs 6 layers tall in a good season. Oh what memories

In 1951, my dad traded off the F-12 with 1 row mounted picker and got a new M with a 2 row 2-MH picker. This was the big outfit in the neighborhood at Ada, Ohio. Pop did a lot of custom work with this outfit.

One New Years eve he was picking for a neighbor who had quite a bit of corn. Big snowstorm predicted for New Years day. At dark farmer told dad he couldn't unload any more and would have to stop when the wagons were full. Pop told him to see how many wagons he could get from the neighbors so he could keep picking. Worked till 1:00 am and had 13 wagon loads of corn setting in the field next morning covered with over a foot of snow. The farmer was well pleased with that.

As a kid I always thought corn looked like gold coming out of a picker or sheller. Come to think of it it was to the farmer.
