road dust on rims

Driving to the farm I"ve got to drive 10 miles on gravel. Every two months I have to pull the back tires off and clean the rims, I get a build-up of about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch of mud and dust, It throws the balance out and I get a shimmy. Anybody have any tricks to keep it from building up?? thanks

Different rims with no undercuts or flat (cylindrical) areas, A hose!! Pave the road. All not the answer you want. Jim

Back when I was a youngster everyone lived on a gravel road and no one worried about shimmy or out of balance. Yours is a new one on me.

My dad did auto repair in a rural community. The first thing to do when balancing was clean the dust and dirt out.

Seems like the newer open spoke rims tend to do that now. Unlike the older 15 or 16 in steel rims. There is a lot more flat area on the inside of the rims.

Just a guess, does your truck have open spoke aluminum style rims?

Me too. Our pickup almost never drove on a paved road and I don"t think I ever noticed a shimmy due to "road dust". I think Matt needs to get his tires balanced or slow down.

I'd say you are driving like a old man, just kinda amboling along. Pep it up throw that dust and dirt off. Seriously the guys probably have something, when they say the new wide low profile rims, are to blame.

I agree with VicS, you have to drive a little faster and it will keep some of that dust out. Going too slow doesn't let the wheel self clean from air passing by. My pickups have spent alot of miles on gravel and never had one build up enough to throw it out of balance--but anything is possible. Now mud is a different story.
