i dont want to derail dahlin's post below, but heres a question, i can see one of these rigs being handy for chores, even if there expensive, but most of us here also have several tractors too, my light chores [ i just need to haul some tools or posts and wire ect and do something]get done with a 30 hp tractor with a 6 x3 steel box carryall on the 3 point hitch, ive never found anyplace this unit wont go, why do some of you prefer a utv over one of my rigs?

Covers distances better/faster. Capable of hauling (in some cases multiple) passengers safely. More maneuverable in most cases.

I just got one. I have 6 4 wheelers of various sizes and get along great but went with a utv for hauling as it has a box and it seems to go where a atv will go. If it does what I want I'll keep it around. Mainly be doing irrigation and spraying. I have a buddy that sold all his atvs and says he'll only have utvs from here out.

MF poor hit the nail on the head. Plus for guys like me with bum knees they are easier to get on and off of when the work being done requires that old on off on routine. Climbing can be a real chore somethimes.

Rick

My 6x6 Polaris will go where the neighbor's 8n would never fit when getting firewood. And I can get a load home a lot faster than he can.

MF Poor pretty well nailed it. I"m assuming a 4-wheeler would be classified as an atv. I use mine EVERY day to check cows, move electric fences, pull my wood splitter, haul pretty much anything in the way of tools, pull small trailers hauling hay, move empty wagons.....run to the shed for more beer...got the picture yet? I also have bad knees and getting off and on tractors all day just kills me. I ride my 4-wheeler "side saddle" style. 'Don't have to swing my leg over that thing this way and sure cuts down on knee pain. Just walk up to it, turn side ways and plop my old butt down....hit the starter, I'm gone. I used to have a Honda Goldwing motorcycle, my wife said one day "Why don't you trade that thing off for a 4-wheeler". 'Smartest thing that woman EVER told me! I did.

Well I heard about someone trying to heard a sow with a 2000 Ford with underslung exhaust. Story goes that one of the old sows decided she was out to get whoever walked in the pen. Farmer John got on the tractor to keep away from the sow. The old sow decided she was going to go underneath the tractor but couldnt quite fit under the muffler. The operator said there was a multitude of squealing and a smoking with a stench of burning hair/flesh. Ha ha ha The tractor had to be jacked up off the old sow! I can only imagine that the old sow was a happy camper:)

I don't farm any more rent my land. I have a 4320 john deere compact but I use the gato for hauling wood my hardwood 40 is about 1.5 miles from home and you need to cross a swamp to get there I don't think the trsctor would do it.Also use for baiting deer and hauling tree stands and some times my wife and I just go for a ride about just for fun.

Yeah, Been there done that.

Watched a 2500# bull push a MF180 backwards across the barnyard. Was in gear, wheels going forward.

And one other thing that has not been mentioned (I didn't notice anyway) is the fact that you can run all summer on a gallon of gas. Bob

Compared to useing a tractor, easier to get on and off, safer for carrying passenger(s),fits through narrower and lower clearances, spot spraying without dismounting, easier for wife and grandkids to drive if I need help, less damage from tires while driving on lawn and newly planted grain fields, and adding on every week.
That's chores, now pleasure, alows wife and I to off road with kids, wife and I short cut to neighbors place, rides smoother, alows me to bird hunt with boys not to mention hauling spare coats, amo, dog supplies, water, ocasional small fries and old timers. Easier to transport to hunting destinations.
I'm pretty sure I would capsize a tractor on some ditches and hills where I take the UTV.
Chores and practical use aside,it has been priceless just for those activities with our kids we otherwise wouldn't have.

I am running an electric golf car that is lifted with ATV tires. This thing can really get around good and rarely gets stuck. Even in snow. I really like being able to jump in and go. Being electric, I plug it in about once a week and it is always ready to go. Has a small dump bed on it so I carry all of the usual stuff I need. I only have 40 acres of flat ground so works well for this size property. A larger spread may not be as ideal. I can pull a small trailer for fencing or firewood, and even have used it to move a hay wagon and the hay rake. Handled it just fine.

John

I use a golf cart as my UTV. I put a 6 inch lift and a good set of all terrian tires on it to make it go through the field a little easier. Total cost for all $1400. I have had it for roughly 14 years now.

Why I like it over a tractor:
1. Kids can help out easier, they have been able to drive the cart since they were 5 years old. Safer than on a big tractor. Wont go too fast, kids cant get hurt as easy.
2. Can move multiple people. I sell trees, sometimes the people want to see them before I dig.
3. Runs all summer on very little gas.
4. Very LIGHT. Can get across a wet lawn in the spring, when a tractor would leave 12 inch trenches.
5. Narrow, goes where tractors wont.
6. Almost anyone can drive it, no training like a tractor.
7. Turning radius.
8. Lots of other things I cant think of at the moment.

Now there are many other things a golf cart/four wheeler/UTV cant do, I dont use my golf cart to drag a log, haul firewood, etc.

We got a Ranger in 2010 didn't need to have it but....

Six months later, that is the rig that runs eVery day on this place, wife loves it, I do too, don't know how I could be without it. (And ran the same farm for decades without it...)

Picking rocks is so so so much easier to get on and off than the tractor.

Had a lot of tiling done around here the past 4 years, even the tile guys liked to see me come with it, could haul them and stuff around, speeded up their day.

With the livestock, chasing a
Cattle and fixing fence, checking on things.

I got a little compact loader tractor that is so handy, I know what you mean, why would I want anything else....

But wow, the Ranger is just so handy, different thing, does some things so much better.

And the part about making the wife happy, I'm out in the field and she drives up with a smile on her face - well that's it right there for me, thing was worth the cost for those smiles.

I don't use my as much as I thought I would, but it sure is handy for all the reasons already stated. Nice to just throw whatever in the back and go. My tractors are cranky starters and keep one on the manure spreader all the time, and the utility veh. starts fairly quickly, unless it's pretty cold. I've mentioned selling it and one of the tractors to get a modern utility tractor, but the wife likes it so it stays.

We use gas golf carts for our produce operation. We pick on demand for our roadside stand, so they get a workout. They are CHEAP compared to UTV's....and very efficient. Our soil is gravelly, so no need for 4x4 or a lift. We also have a Honda Recon 4x2 if we need a little more speed.

I've got two. And they are a nice high jump for the cows. If I might explain, we have a new olympic sport around here. We use it to tag and vaccinate calves in the pasture. I drive it between the cow and calf, then the g-son grabs the calf, and tags and does the needle work as I hand him the tools. Only problem is, Jake or Willie will sometimes try to help, and the cow will go after them. After a trip or two around the UTV, the dog usually retreats to underneath the front wheels. Of course, the cow loses sight on the way around, and spots the g-sons butt. He has been flipped OVER the UTV twice now.....

Could never justify the $$$’s for a UTV, so I brought a mid 90’s total loss Jeep YJ Wrangler off insurance co. Cost about $1k with a busted rear spring and prop pulled out of trans and minor panel damage. Spent $100 on spring and parts and beat body back into shape, and it’ll do most things a UTV will do. It has a roll bar, radio, heater, hard top and doors for winter….take them off for summer. Light weight 4cy and manual trans, 4wd, hi and lo range. Teaching the kids to drive a stick shift now.

I've thought of putting a bed on my Suzuki Sidekick 4x4 and making it a farm vehicle too....maybe make a nice little wood cab on it for heat and dust control. I bought it 13 years ago for $3100, so I don't have much into it. If I keep it street legal that is an added bonus.

Started with a Polaris Ranger 6x6 in 1998. Drove it for 1700 hrs. Still running strong, but wifey wanted something newer. Her Christmas present was a 2010 Polaris Ranger 4X4 with only 48 hrs. Bought it from the original owner who was a friend of mine.

Our Kubota RTV has a strong hydraulic system and will pull a hay 10 wheel hay rake so it earns its keep in hay season. The rest of the time, it is essential to the wife's chores, and hauls the dogs around while we go for a ride together. It's a dandy hog shooting platform, too.

I use a Yamaha atv 250cc 2wd all spring, summer and fall to fence, check sheep, haul firewood and do field repairs on machinery. I have a trailer I pull everywhere with it to haul or carry whatever I need. It will fence or haul firewood all day 3 days running on 2 gallons of gas. When I get older I will want a utv so I don't have to get my leg over the seat. I have an AC D14 I could use for all this but the 4wheeler is so much faster, more maneuverable and cheaper to run. And when the work is done, you can go play with it.

It's the most versatile machine we've ever had.We spray, pull a spreader and I've even raked with it.Safe for my wife too. Smooth ride over rough ground. You won't be sorry.Good Luck.

I just bought a mule, 2012, because I have grandkids. They're only small for a little while. I love it.

I'm with Chris. No way I could possibly afford a UTV and I won't have an ATV on the place. I use a 59 Willys CJ5. Gave $400.00 for it 20 years ago. Came with the plow. Pretty sure none of these high dollar UTVs will be running in 53 years.
