need to make me some crutches, today my legs dont work, sometimes there fine, its due to 3 crushed discs and 1 vertebra out of place in my back, i can walk depending on how they line up or not, was thinking of trying to make a set out of 2 inch pvc, i need to sort of take the body weight off my legs when i slide them forward, any other ideas?

Go to the local thrift shops, they have all manner of crutches for a few bucks. About what you'd pay for PVC which, if it breaks.....

Good 'ol yankee inginuity. Why buy if you can make it yourself. If you use a heavier schedule PVC that won't break you should be good to go. Send us a pic when you get them made. Last summer when my knee took a dump I wasn't about to buy a cane when I could make my own. I glued oak and maple strips together, chucked them in the wood lathe and I made myself a striped cane. The top handle is walnut. Jim

i could try the lions maybe none here at the thrift shops , was thinkin gof the 2 inch to hold up to the weight, i dont need them all the time just when things get locked up once i can get to moving i can usually get my legs going, surgery has been recommended by my dr, but if i do that i'll be down awhile, plus id loose some of my ability to so some things, dr gave me this example picture 2 small square hay bales one on top of the other, you will be able to pick up the top bale and put it in the truck but you wont be able to get down low enough to get the bottom bale, plus the pain may not go away on this type of injury , so im still thinking on the surgery if im that bad, its going
to be real hard to feed the animals, and i may be forced to stop and go live in the city , dont think i can do that

I got a new set at our local medical supply store. They cost me $5. Insurance paid the other $45. If you ask around you can probably find a pair that some one doesn't need any more like a neighbor or relative. I wouldn't use pvc pipe.

Call the local American Legion or VFW. That is where a lot of used supplies like crutches and canes end up along with beds and wheel chairs.

My Lord man, have you ever used crutches? I was on them for a year and nine months. I only fell down twice, but it hurt like he!! both times. Please do yourself a favor and get the real thing. Like others have said, almost every second hand store has them. I feel your pain, every step I take is pure agony but I refuse to lay down and wither to nothing, but trust me I do not do anything that I can avoid to make matters worse.

I don't know what is near you, but if there is a goodwill they usually have tons of them in the as is section for real cheep. That's where I go when I need them. Good luck with the back, I know how it is when it is out like that it really sucks...hope it gets better for you soon...Sometimes the crutches really help because your spine can get pulled by the gravity and stretch things out as you are suspended by your armpits...hang in there we are pulling for you.

Try a set of "forearm crutches" as they won't wear holes in your underarms.

I feel for you, hope you find some relief. Sometimes you need to bite the bullet and have the surgery done.

Having the wrong crutches and not having them adjusted right could make things much worse! I think the crutches that wrap around your forearm might be what you need. Talk to your Dr. or physical therapist to get set up properly. Maybe a back brace would help as well. PVC can break so I think would be a bad idea.

No.

Crutches are not that expensive, and used crutches can be had from various sources, such as your local VFW. If you know anyone who has had knee surgery in the past year, they probably have a set collecting dust.

well something happened during the night, today i can get around and feed and do some light work, but im going to find me some crutches anyway as this problem is on going and will only get worse with time eventually i wont walk, and i know it,but im going to for as long as i can, if i can figure a way to move and do what i got to do im going to do it , but they'll be a help next time, thanks for all the help and I'll look into those forearm style, i hadn't thought of those

It seems to me that every community has a place that collects all that kind of stuff that people get and then look to pass on. In our town for years it was the fire dept. Does any body know how to attach pair to a snowmobile?

I wish you the best of luck Eric. Let us know how things turn out and which way you went to relieve your back pain.

Crutches, walkers and canes are often available at yard sales, thrift stores, Goodwill Stores or flea markets for a very few dollars or less.
You might want to check the Lions Club, VFW, American Legion, DAV, Local Hospitals, and local Nursing Homes. There is often a large excess of this kind of equipment.

The walker is very handy around the house, especially when you get up in the morning or the middle of the night.
I would suggest that you get at least two crutches, a walker, and "enough" canes to keep two canes at your home and in each car and on each piece of equipment that you operate.
Any pressure or stress that you can take off or your back may be very helpful.
The foam crutch pads help. The foam padded hand grips for the walker and for the canes also help.
Check to be sure that the crutch tips, cane tips, and walker have good, fresh, large, rubber NON SLIP tips.
I like adjustable aluminum crutches and walkers and adjustable steel canes. GOOD adjustable wood crutches are OK also, but are heavier.
See a physical therapist for instruction on the proper way to use each device. Waking with two canes (if you are able to) can be much more convenient than crutches.
