(quoted from post at 13:17:16 02/03/13) I like your PTO setup. Best part is you can walk under it and not have to step over it.
ep, thats what I had in mind when I set it up like that, better then walking around the tractor every time you have to go to the tail end of the mill

Not to be bossy, but I would think you should put a shield around that pto. A scarf could blow in the wind or a tall Texan my walk through and hit their head.

Lyle that looks good. I would put some type of shield on that drive shaft. Two reasons: 1) If the shaft would fail so that it would not be thrown at you. 2) It looks like it is about head high( Maybe it it taller then the picture looks) but I would worry about walking under it and catching a hood/hair in the joint. If I remember you have girls. IF they have long hair and are around the mill when it is running their hair could get caught.

There was a Younger girl(14 or 15) here that got scalped a few years ago. She was working around a PTO on an auger and there where not any shields on it. She had long hair and she bent over to pick something up. Her hair fell toward the ground and the wind blew it over into the PTO shaft. Scalped her in a split second. She has had several surgeries to reattach her scalp. The disfigurement has caused her some serious mental issues. Girls are very worried about how they look.

I really like the way you have used things that you can find "cheap" to make a working saw mill. That kind of drive is getting more rare all the time. Good luck on the lumber business.

Hi Lyle, congratulations, you have been working hard during these cold day's of winter, most of us have sat idle because we could not tolerate the cold.Job well done. We are happy for you.cheers, Murray

great pictures! And I will say the same thing Murray said,I have been pretty lazy lately, your pictures always make me feel lazy anyway, you are a hard worker,my dad would have liked to met you!

Lyle,

Thank you for the pictures. They are always informative and inspirational. You are a very multi-talented man. I'd love to be your apprentice for a couple of years. I might be able to figure out what I'm doing (or should be doing).

Best of luck with your new invention.

That looks like a great setup. I always like all the pix.

I second the comment on adding shields, you never know what you grab for if you slip and loose your footing, especially outside in mud or snow.

You work fast enough, you will probably have them on before I hit submit on this reply!

Now that you have the power to the mill, what's going to be the "weak link" in the power train? Belt, chain or shaft????

The way I build things, every thing is a weak link :D

I had a brother with long hair, he got it caught in the spindle of a large drill press, took off a piece of his scalp faster than heck.
