Very impressive! A very impressive exercise in futility. There is no way that tree will survive. I may take it two years or more, but it is a dead tree.

An old established tree just can't survive that.

Hope it made the tree huggers happy for a bit.

i too have my doubts about it's length of life but what impressed me the most is it did not topple over, especially when it descended into the hole.

Gene I bought a house in 1967 sitting 14 ft from the house was a 30 year old pin oak that was over 22 in diameter about 20 ft tall or better.
We wanted to add on the house in that direction. I took a cat hoe and dug down with a 30 inch bucket. Dug down about 12 ft around three sides.
Then on the other side started digging all dirt out for a slot over forty feet. Took a D 8 pulled a cable under the dirt clump much as a cutter. Next wet everything down over night. placed a cable sling with old truck tires on the back side and hooked two d8s with winch. Moved the entire clump tree and dirt over 40 feet. Backfilled , watered and adder fertilize. To this date 30 years latter it is still growing. Where there is a will there is a way. If they kept that treed soaked in water for several weeks I bet it lived.

The old tree will probably live. I'm certain the city wouldn't have undertaken such an expenditure without some professional advice on how to move it without killing it.

Some say the tree will die, hopefully not. That is a good team effort to do something that is not so monumental on the scale of world-wide accomplishments, but was important enough to those who believed in the project to give it their best. Always wanted to be in on something like this.

Not many cities would spend that kind of money to save a tree! An impressive undertaking. Superman would have had trouble pulling that one off! Thanks for posting.
