I see posts from time to time on here from sports fans that say something about a sport and then folks come on the topic and start bashing it. I for one like to watch my kids sports and some football games on tv. I enjoy watching a player do something that takes skill and persistance to acomplish. Those kids and atheletes put in a lot of time toward what they do and deserve a bit of praise. My kids keep good grades and put in the time to get where they are. I don't care for pro sports much because it seems they just want paid and have big egos but you get the same people in any line of work. I think that sports will teach kids a good life lesson of humility, perserverance and acomplishment. Working on tractors, driving a semi, or doing everyday jobs don't get the praise they should but most folks just do what they do and can look at a finished job and be proud of what they acomplished. I enjoy looking at this site and seeing a guys newly restored tractor and think to myself, wow, he really knew his stuff! My point is that I don't think sports are a bad thing if done properly. Yes some get way out of contol on them but I bet you they have deeper issues.

Back when my boys were in high school , the coach would tell the boys who to take out of the game , didn t matter how bad theywere hurt .
I liked to watch sports sometime but when you tell your boy s to hurt some other player just to win , then its no longer a sport. I realize there must be a winner in a game but you don t injure a plyer for that.

True.

What really fried me when I was in college was there were students who worked just as hard as any athlete preparing themselves for academic or performing competitions, yet when you picked up a newspaper all you got was 8 pages of sports and not a word about the other students.

I once did a study of both the Omaha and Lincoln, NE newspapers for two weeks during the OFF season for football, and found for every column inch of text devoted to academics, five were devoted to sports. It would be worse than that during the football season.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought schools were supposed to be about academics.

Sports in general for kids I have no problem with as long as the coach isn't doing anything that will get other kids hurt (be that telling them to take out a player or having a guy starve himself to compete in a different class).

I do have a problem when the school shorts the classroom to support a team too.

AS far as the Pro's go......they get paid and well payed at that, to play a game. Then thing they can do anything because they are a sports hero. They get no praise from me.

Different strokes for different folks.I watch mostly pro
baseball,UConn college hoops and pro football playoff games.Their
regular season doesn't really interest me when I can watch the
highlights of the game in 2 minutes.

I like my tractors and make as many shows as time allows.

I played three sports in high school and I loved it. Unfortunately, sports now gets top billing over academics. When my high school has a football or basketball game that is playing for a state championship, the school district pays for the motel rooms for the athletes. When the same high school send a team for a state championship at scholar bowl, they would not pay for their motel rooms for the scholars. Anybody see a problem with that?
Also, there is a town down the road from me that has a population of about 3500. About 10 years ago, this town produced a lady basketball player that played for one of our state colleges and went on to become a WNBA player. We'll call this player "Jane Doe". When you get to the city limits of this town, there is a sign that says the name of the town and a sign underneath it that says "Home of Jane Doe". Now I'm very proud of this gal for playing athletics, but what did she do that the other thousands of high school graduates (from this town) did not? She probably only made about $45K a year playing basketball. (The big money in pro sports is the sponsorships) I'm sure there were many other kids who graduated in her same high school class that are making more money than she did when she was playing WNBA basketball, such as doctors or lawyers. So why did she have her name put on a sign on the outskirts of town? (BTW, she's a nice girl and I have no problems with her. Matter-of-fact, I know her mom and dad)
Therein lies the problem with athletics. The football games and the basketball gym is packed with fans, but academics has taken the back burner. It's no wonder that the U.S. has fallen way behind the world in math and science.
