We live in a university town in the Big Ten. If you're not familar with something like this, this university has a "Surplus" store where the retired items from all departments go to be sold. What are they you say? It goes from semi trailers to trenchers to desks to clothes to exercise equipment to lab tools to laptops. It really is an unbelievable place. There's prices on most things and they will dicker. There's two people there you can hash it out with. At any one time they must have 40 good american made filing cabinets. You guys would love this place. There is also a great ag department here, so you'll see parts of a combine they did tests on. Oh I forgot there was an actual test plot combine there for sale last year. You just never know. Supposedly there are a group of 5 or so guys that are there EVERY day when the doors open to get the deals!!

The guys that are there in the morning every day, are probably buying things cheaper then resell them later on e-bay or where ever they can.

We have a State surplus outlet about 40 miles away where all colleges and state agencies take their old leftovers. Some good stuff to be had, but a lot of worn out junk too.

The federal surplus is where the good stuff is, your tax dollars at work.

Local community college has a "yard sale" in the gymnasium from time to time. Take lots of yard sale donations plus their own surplus. Bunch of computers, printers, other computer electronics, PA systems... I got a bunch of stuff for a song.
Using the computer right now, not that old, and in good working condition. A top of the line lazer printer with almost new toner cartridge, and a full drawer of paper. A couple take out PAs from lecturns in the classrooms. Less than $100! Keep your ear to the ground for that kind of thing - bargains may be found.

U of M has one in Ann Arbor. They have a lot of junk and the public helps them dispose of it and give them some cash in the process. I'm working on a Steelcase conference desk from there right now. I also have Steelcase storage cabinets and file cabinets from their disposition center. Forget the chairs and computers as they are too old, worn out, and expensive to make it worth while.

We have been going to the University surplus auctions for a few years.I have bought alot of stuff that I use. We have also made some money selling stuff we bought. If an item(pallet) doesn't sell it can be bought for $2.50. Fun and can be a money maker.
