Grain truck help

I have lots of tractors. However, it is the grain truck giving me fits. 1958 GMC 370 with the 270 motor.

The speedo quit (cable and speedo good). It really bugs me so I decided to see what's up. I pulled it all apart and called for parts at Jim Carter Classic Trucks. They have never seen what I have. It is a GM trans but does not use the plastic parts to drive the cable off the trans like the Chevys do. It has two steel gears and a twisted shaft of about five inches that goes into the trans. It is that shaft that is broken. I took a picture and emailed it to them and they are pretty baffled. It is one of those "I think I have seen that before but have no idea where to begin looking," thing.

These guys deal in only old GM stuff. The owner has a COE Chev - they know what they are doing. They are mystified.

Anyone know anything about the heavy trans or speedo stuff on these old GMC beasts? Anyone know of someone that does? This has really gotten under my skin and I won't let it win!

What is the diameter of the shaft. I had a speedo shaft or "key" as the GM parts man called it twist off in one of my old trucks once. It was about 5 inches long and about 1/8 diameter. He was able to order a new one, just needed to know the length.

That kind of sounds like it. About the right dimensions. This one is round stock but has a raised strip welded to it to act sort of like a key. The whole thing is twisted so it resembles a drill bit. It didn't get twisted over time as it is obviously part of the manufacture.

Where did you get it?

Mine was round stock with a raised strip on each end too. Mine was not twisted tho. I got it from my local Chevy dealer about 8 years ago. The parts man at the time was a 40 year veteran of the business so I'am sure he knew just where to get the part numbers for them. Since GM dumped medium duty trucks when the government took them over I don't know if they still carry any parts for medium duty trucks. I have a GM medium duty parts book in the shop, I'll take a look tomorrow if I remember and see if I can find a part number.

That would be awesome. I have stared at that thing and wondered about that twist. Maybe it isn't stock.

If all else fails use your GPS unit whenever you are using the truck. It will tell you your speed and miles traveled. At the end of the day write down your miles and reset the GPS. Armand

I"ll bet the Carter guys have never seen what you are talking about "cuz they"re used to dealing with pickups and you have a medium-duty trick with a parking brake at the rear of the tranny, necessitating the use of the long speedo drive to get it out from behind the brake drum for access to connect the cable. Is it a Muncie tranny or something else? Post a pic of what"s broke, and, likely someone will recognize it and be able to help you.

Looked at my parts books. My book starts at 1968. It lists about 6 different keys but not the lengths for them. If you knew the make and model for your transmission, it groups keys with different transmission groups. Do you have any older well established truck repair shops in your area or older Chevy or GMC dealers? Most of the older dealers sold medium duty trucks back in the day. Maybe post a picture of it and someone my be able to help.

Give Ryan Chevrolet GMC a call and ask for the older truck guy in parts (Marv?) He's an encyclopedia on stuff of that era and has access to the old paper parts books. If nothing else he MAY be able to come up with a part # to search for on line, and he has access to the GM obsolete parts locator.
