Pic of teaching them when they're young...

My 4 year old really wanted to help me clean out the wood stove last night. I thought why not, she helped me clean out the top and she cleaned out the ash pan herself. Then actually swept the hearth! Before anyone hangs me, the stove had burned out the other day and was not hot and was safe. Went home for lunch today and she helped me make the fire since it's getting cold again today (63 yesterday!). At least someone is helping me at home!

My daughter was my best helper. Son would just slip away to do something that he wanted to do, but daughter would patiently stand by until I told her what to do next. She was especially anxious to help me if it would get her out of the kitchen!

Now she's a project manager for an international contractor.

It's really neat when those tiny tots try and be grown ups and help....trouble is when they get to be teenagers they generally need a little encouragement!
My wife was the encourger in our house and both my kids got led around by the ear a few times when She didn't approve of their work habits!

Wanted my city raised grandson who is 6 to stay with us over the holidays and help me feed cattle everyday. So he could tell his class what he did. His mother did not thing much of that idea.

I have a granddaughter 2 yrs and a grand son 2 1/2 by my last 2 sons. when they are here visiting, they both love to go with grandpa, out to feed the cows. We let them pour a coffee can of ground corn thru the fence, into the feed bunk, for the 4 cows. then they want to climb on the hay in the barn. We stand guard so they don't fall, and get hurt, and they have a blast! They want grandpa to let them ride on the tractor, but I can't find a safe way to mount an extra seat, with belts, to one of them-(old Allis's) Maybe way down the road, it will happen, if they are still interested!

Ralph I am assuming a WD 45 tractor??? Just widen the rear wheels out and move the fenders out just a little. Then mount a used school bus seat between the fenders. I have done this for two or three fellows. I set the fenders where they just miss the seat. That way there is no way for a kid to fall off the rear. I fit a piece of plywood between the front legs of the seat so even if they slide off the front they can't go out under the seat. I then just make some steps on the back side to step up and over the seat. Not the easiest to get on but safe once you are on.

These guys used them that way on tractor rides.

There are guys around here turning the old school busses into camper/tail gate vans and such. You can find the seats for free.

Yes sir! Never too early to teach them to work. I enclosed my back porch last summer and it was easiest to dig the footer by hand, my boys enthusasticly helped.

Normally to empty the ashes you put the handle in the loop in the pan and carry the whole pan out right?

You're right, this stove has done us well for 13? years. I usually heat the whole house with it. Front room gets a little warm though.

That's pretty good, she definitely is spicy as i say it. My wife is 100% Italian and my joke is this daughter some how has 80% Italian blood and 20% me.

Careful putting ashes in that plastic bucket. Guy not too far from here burned is house down putting hot ashes in a plastic garbage can!

if you look close , you can see that the bucket is steel. i'd say by the color of the bucket that at one time it had fiber-ed aluminum paint in it also.
