They ain't killin enough to suit me.
Baxter Black did a story on that same thing a while ago though. Told it through his cat's eyes.

since we got our cat last year we have seen less birds at the feeder, however we have not witnessed any being killed. we have not had any mice in the house, garage, basement or my shop. lately she has been bringing up baby moles and leaving them (dead) on the garage. no reduction in the geese population, yet.

These people are unbelievable. I don't remember exactly who it was or why. But I'm sure I heard where some middle age(as in the "middle ages") idiots got the great idea that cats were spreading disease, and killed them off. So guess what happened with the rodent population? And what was the result of that?
Why are so many idiots wanting to drive us all back to the stone age?

One of my friends sent that to me already today. Like I told him, one of the best things that ever happened to my place is when a couple of wild cats made my barn there home. No more bird s--t on my equipment and haven't seen a mouse or rat in years. I don't make friends with them but give them a token cup of cat food everyday. I also put a board in the livestock tank so they don't drown if they fall in getting a drink.

Me neither! Those da*n geese are takin ove as the sky rats of the farms! Used to be pigeons, but these buggers crap like dogs, and eat everything green in their path!

The last cat we had was named dummy. It would fall a sleep on the porch rail and fall off. One day I was working out back and I saw a full grown wood chuck cross the trail and a few minutes latter he comes the cat following it. The next day the cat had a 3 corner rip on top of its head so I guess he must have caught it

Coyotes may get a few, but man from Chin A probably gets his share, too. As for the cats getting so many critters, guess they haven't studied redtails and other raptors yet. There's likely more redtails and hawks in the countryside than cats in the urban setting. And, they are a favorite prey of the redtail.....

Yeah, you betcha! We don't have a shortage of birds. I didn't catch what part of the country they are talking about. Here in the cold northern plains we don't have many feral cats running around, if any. Thirty years ago or so I read that Vietnam was trying to get their people to stop eating cats because they were becoming overrun with rats. Not quite the kind of food cycle I'm interested in tho. Jim

Owls like cats too, as do eagles. Owls got all my friendly kittens last summer, the only two that made it were the two black ones.

wife has six bird feeders out in the front yard and there is 15/20 birds there at any given time.she also has 4 barn cats that are always close to the house never seen one of em ever after a bird.

My Sunshine looks almost like that. He weights about thirty pounds. At least once a day when he lays down on his tummy, Shadow, a little female who weights about six pounds will get upon his back and give him a back massage with her front paws for about fifteen to twenty minutes. She gets this real serious look on her face while she is doing it and he just lays there with a big grin on his face.

In central NY our big problem is not cats, its Fisher. We have had a population explosion in our area, and they eat just about everything except for the coyotes. I know one thing, they sure like the barn cats, our neighbors dairy went from around 20 cats to two, in just a month or so.

I am kind of hoping they figure out the Canadian Geese are tasty, because it looks like we are running out of squirrels and turkeys for sure.

BBC News

I never was a cat lubber till about 2 years ago one showed up and I took a liking to him... A few times a year I would get a snake in the shop and had a few mice,,,, Dipstick is a born killer,,, He lives to kill if not he would have to go.... I started training him early

This reminds me of a news item I found a couple of months ago. Seems two animal rights groups got to fighting amongst themselves over catch and release vs. catch and terminate for feral cats.

Around here if you don't have cats you will have mice. The other day I stepped out the back door and found a spine and attached rear legs from a bunny. The feet still had fur on them. They usually leave more of a present for me but I guess they were hungry.

Primary driver of attrition is Owls and birds of prey. Black or dark colored cats tend to last longer.

I will never understand cat lovers. My wife and kids love cats. My shop is covered in cat crap and stinks of cat pee, my barn is the same, the basement where she keeps her ancient cats too. She'll do a load of laundry and the darn cat will sleep in the basket on the clean laundry or knock the whole thing over onto the floor, which is covered in cat hair and bits of litter of course, and she'll forgive the cat instantly. I drop a dirty sock outside the hamper and it's the end of the world! I'm going to start crapping in her flower beds, puking on her car hood and peeing on everything in site. Maybe I'll be forgiven too, but I doubt it.

Her cats won't mess with rats at all. Birds and mice, baby rabbits, frogs, that's about it. I have to poison the rats.

A local "Eagle Cam" had to be shut down for a
day or so last year, until the eagles finished eating a domestic cat that they caught.

Great picture of the cat stalking the goose.
I watched my big ol' Maine Coon cat stalkin' a full grown wild turkey one day. The turkey kept movin' away and finally flew but it would have been interesting to see what would happen if the turkey stood his ground.
I also have a very pretty calico cat.
My Sister-In-Law in Northwest Connecticut has has a "calico" red squirrel visiting her bird feeders this winter. I took this picture about teo weeks ago.
