18.4X34 vs 20.8x34

I have rims for 18.4-34 tires but it is next to impossible to find decent used tires at a decent price. I have found a pair of good 20.8x34 for sale close by. My rims are 16" wide. Would this work or not? If not, I will keep looking. This is for a field tractor that gets a little use each year, not a one tractor farming operation, or a puller.

You could fit the tires on there but it's going to be FAR from optimal. The tread will not sit flat. It's going to roll down into the sidewalls because the walls are pulled so far in on the narrow wheel. It's also going to limit the carrying capacity of the tire.
Personally I'd keep looking for a 18.4 tire.

Hi, my brother did a similar thing by putting 16.9x28s on a 12" rim. The first set of tires were Goodyear with the regular tread and they worked good, they were replaced by Firestone with the short 23 degree tread angle and the problem with these tires were that you had to under inflate them or the center part of the tire was sticking up because the side walls had been squeeze in by the under sized rims. Also if you are going to be plowing with 20.8x34s you will require an 18" plow or the tire will be squashing the furrow down.

1970-1655 I have a pair of deep thread Firestone. I'll have to go look, they are in the back of the shed, but I think they are about 50%. They might be a little weather checked, not sure. They are mounted on MM rims, and not sure of width. If interested and I'll go look and see if I can get a picture. Harold

I am located in Indiana, about 60 miles from Indianapolis, Louisville Kentucky, and Cincinnati Ohio. I don't mind driving as long as the weather is not real nasty. I am up for a day trip.

Thanks for the offer but Iowa would be more than a day trip. Are you planning to come to the National Farm Machinery Show at Louisville? If so, we might be able to work something out.

I think the 20.8's will be fine. But will be a little wide to go down 30 inch rows. I live about 150 miles southwest of you.(45 miles west of Evansville) I have some 18.4 X 34's but they are different mfg's. They would be cheap. I also have a pair of BFG 45deg tread. They are old and hard, better for pulling than farming. Vic

Harold I would be interested in the 18.4 x 34 tires. I have a good friend that needs a set for his JD 4020. They just need to have good casings. Email me it you would with more information.
