What we got yesterday... Tractor-cicles

Got an ice storm in MN yesterday. Thought it looked cool, so went out and took about 100 pics. It was cool all right - about froze my fingers (which makes me think maybe I don't really care if I ever get wintertime junkyard shots). Power stayed on - we were glad of that!

I included the iced branches and the iced ground pics... because I just know RBnSC will love them. Sorry, no corn shucks, Ron! :)

Actually included them for those who may never have seen an ice storm. The grass is just crunchy - it sounds cool when you walk around on it. My pinky is intentionally in the one photo to give some perspective of the thickness of the ice. It is fairly thick, though we have had thicker in the past.

The pics before & after the tractor seat closeup are both grass. One a closeup of the grass, one showing what it looks like when you walk across the lawn and crunch up the iced grass. It's fun to listen to. So are the trees, they just moan, crackle and snap in the wind. Thankfully, we did not get much wind or we'd have broken branches all over the place.

That's generally what it looks like in SC, when we get winter weather. We will get some snow now and then, but mostly ice build up on everything.

We had a pretty good storm go through this past Friday in the upstate of SC. No build up on the trees or power lines. The roads were a mess. NC just across the border got it pretty good.

makes for great photos, but BAD conditions, in my area we would always loose power with that much ice, cold yesterday, supposed to be upper 40's today, 60 tomorrow and by Friday highs back to 19, crazy, thanks for pics

When I saw that old Regular I thought of you Sweetfeet. How many tractors do you have?

We've had some good frosts here this month. I have my right foot in a cast but my toes are sticking out and when I take the dog out in the mornings the frozen grass tickles my toes when I don't have them covered...LOL I don't stay out very long though.

We haven't had an ice storm here since 2006 it bent our ten year old Oak trees almost to the ground. 2 out of 3 recovered but the one still has a slight lean to him.

You're lucky you never lost your electric.

Jim/Pa,

Thanks! She will run someday - maybe by next summer. My husband just finished going completely through the radiator and put it together last night in the shop.

Here are some better yard art views.

John B.,

We only have 5 tractors:

1931 Regular

1935/36 F20 (apparently s.n. is a 35 but the front end is a 36 by the bolster number and the steering gear cover - bought a front end to rectify that problem, but probably not until the Regular is up and running).

1936 B John Deere

1969 4020 John Deere

and a DC Case - not sure of year, but it is a later model. Plan to check out the s.n., but I have not done so yet.

My husband had to crutch it for over 3 months wiht a broken foot. Was a bummer - not fun when you cannot walk. At least his was in the summer/early fall, so no snow or ice to contend with.

About 5-6 years ago we had a really bad ice storm and ended up with several house guests because we never lost power, but they all did. A friend or our teen daughter, plus my in-laws, stayed here for three days. We hung out in our heated shop a lot, to get away from the house full of people.

MarkWV,

We have been up and down this winter too. 30-40 degrees, then a week of sub-zero. Then warm, then cold again. Hard to get adjusted because it keeps changing so frequently.

JanNicholson,

Thanks. The hayloader is my most recent (and probably last) piece of large yard art. I think a couple things looks cool - anymore than that and we will look like a salvage yard.

The loader sat on slough ground at the back of our farm since we bought our place almost 27 years ago. We drug it out of the brush last year.

Dodgeit,
Yeah, ice down south with no sand/salt on the roads seems like it would not be fun.

Wow. That's alot of ice. No way would we have power with ice like that. My wife say's you need a flower pot where the engine should be. "Flower Power"!

Row Crop,

Tell your wife, "too funny" - because I offered to put one in there until my husband gets the engine back in it. He said no. :)

i been through and worked numerous ice storms. however i must admit as i sat here in the warmth with easy listening music on and a hot cup of coffee those photos are something to be admired-from afar.

Seems to me a small block Chevy V8 would look at home on those frame rails.

Just sayin'.

Goose,

We have the engine, head, manifold, etc. Husband just pulled everything it to work on it inside rather than out in the weather.

I'm in WI, just off hwy. 8, but we only got a few minutes of rain before it changed to snow. Ended up with maybe 4" or a little more of the stuff. Much better than ice! And it was a balmy 24 degrees when I got up this morning - much nicer than the -16 and -18 days last week.

Iffen you put some anti-freeze in the engine you wouldn't have to take it in when it gets cold.

Nice pics.

Glad we didn't get ice like that here in Ohio. I got a kick out of your picture sequence, tractor, trees, back to tractor, grass etc. back to tractor... like you just couldn't take your eyes off that tractor. (I don't blame you)

Sid,

LOL!

Old neighbor guy said, "Iffen you bolt the engine in... won't blow out on windy days."

gtractorfan,

Yep, ice is not fun.

The Regular is definitely my favorite tractor, for sure - and is the one I photograph most often.

Fordfarmer,

Rather have snow than ice too...anyday. Some melted off today, but not totally.

Sweetfeet, thanks for sharing, I really like the pics with the tractor in the foreground and wide open field in the background!

I think the Regular my Dad had was a 1929. It had just one brake lever on left. Neighbor was a welder, put an old Model T foot pedal on the right. Ours also had cross lugs till Dad put it on rubber. Loved the Regular:))

Jonak,

We added the right hand brake. I assume they were not factory, but husband has on on his F20 and wanted one on the Regular.

We also added the rear foot-brake on the the right. We bought that one from the Nebraska Cowman.

I know the ice makes neat pics, and I really appreciate them. But, I'm really glad that you took them there, not me taking them here. Nothing like a good old ice storm to put the power out for a few days, and that's no fun.
